LOCAL TORTURE SURVIVORS CONDEMN TORTURE AND BEHEADING IN IRAq “eating detainees with a broom handle and a chair…threatening male detainees with rape…sodomizing a detainee with a broom stick…using military working dogs in attacking and abusing detainees…forcing naked detainees put on top of each other, masturbating, and practicing humiliating oral ####### acts…”
From the report by Major General Antonio M. Taguba, head of the
investigation into the U.S. Army’s prison system in Baghdad
(http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?040510fa_fact; posted 4/30/04 The Group Against Torture in Sudan (GATS), an association of torture survivors, condemns in the strongest language the acts of torture by U.S. forces and the beheading of a U.S. civilian by Islamic extremists in Iraq, and all those responsible for these acts. The group calls on human rights groups and on all Americans to press Congress to conduct a full, independent investigation into all prison systems under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay.
“It is disturbing how the mainstream media keep describing these blatant acts of torture as ‘abuse of detainees,’ “ said Siddiq A. Hadi, a human rights activist who General Secretary of GATS, of the recent revelations of torture in Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib prison. “The media keep ignoring the fact that these acts were no less a violation of human rights than what other dictatorships, including that of Saddam Hussein, have committed against detainees.”
The Group Against Torture in Sudan is an advocacy group in Philadelphia consists of Sudanese American human rights activists and torture victims who survived the torture machine of the current Islamist regime in Sudan.
“The savage, brutal killing of Nicholas Berg that was videotaped and shown on the Internet in the name of Allah as claimed by these inhuman butchers should not be seen separately from what these religious fanatics have been committing for more than a decade,” said Mohamed Elgadi, a co-founder of GATS who survived four months of torture by Islamic militants in Sudan. “Tens of thousands were butchered in the same way in Algeria during the mid-1990s. Over 30, 000 innocent children, women and elders have been brutally killed in the Darfur region in Sudan with full support from the Khartoum regime that shares the same fanatic ideology.”
The Group Against Torture in Sudan sees all human beings as precious, and condemns the horrific decapitation of Mr. Nick Berg as one incident among tens of thousands similar killings targeting Moslem people in Algeria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and other countries..
