The shock, grief and the disbelief of the death of Dr John Garang SPLM/SPLA Chairman, President of Southern Sudan and Vice President of Sudan, cannot be explained.
To us all he was a hero, a living legend, a leader and one of the most passionate and compassionate human beings. His leadership was the discussion at our dinner tables and social gatherings, We must continue his hope for us all he did not die in vain. People of the Sudan, get on your knees and pray for us all, pray that we do not let him down.
In the name of Dr JOHN GARANG MEMORIAL COMMITTEE we would like to announce that
On Saturday, Aug. 13, at 1:00 PM the city of Toronto, in collaboration with the northern and southern Sudanese communities of Toronto, will host a memorial service for Dr. Garang. This will be an opportunity for the communities to recognize Garang's role in the peace agreement and the new unity government.

desire for peace A genuine desire for peace
Having spent time meeting different political parties and groups, I know this is what they want
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clashes erupt in Sudan capital
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aug. 3.
I realized the people of Sudan would likely be facing renewed conflict when on Monday I read that the vice-president of Sudan and former rebel leader of the Southern People's Liberation Army had died in a helicopter crash. So on Wednesday, I was, unfortunately, not surprised to read the above headline. I quickly telephoned friends in Khartoum and found they were out manning barricades in the Khartoum neighbourhood of Kalakla. They told me this was necessary in order to protect their neighbourhood from mobs intent on taking out their anger at what they perceive to have been the assassination of their leader, John Garang.
After international pressure was exerted on the Sudanese government earlier this year, most of the police were sent to Darfur in an attempt to try and get the situation under control. This left the city without adequate policing.
The news of 49 deaths (and counting) is saddening because, like Toronto, Khartoum has always been a place where people from many different tribes and religions come together and somehow make life work. Even as civil war raged between the north and the south for the last 21 years (at the time the world's longest running war) Khartoum remained a safe and secure place to live.
In the late 1990s, I spent the equivalent of several years working with archaeological excavation teams in Sudan and in Khartoum. Although politically it was difficult, the incredibly welcoming and open culture and safe atmosphere was a welcome change from that of other large African cities where personal safety was a real concern.
Last December, I visited Khartoum en route to Darfur to observe the situation there, and was excited to see the different communities united in their hope of finally finding peace. Having spent much time meeting with the different political parties and groups in Sudan, I know that there is a genuine desire for peace. I hope that this recent round of violence can be brought under control and that the different political parties can get back to working on achieving peace and giving the new provisional government a chance to succeed. There is a lot of work to do.
On Saturday, Aug. 13, the city of Toronto, in collaboration with the northern and southern Sudanese communities of Toronto, will host a memorial service for Garang. This will be an opportunity for the communities to recognize Garang's role in the peace agreement and the new multi-party unity government. It is another testament to Toronto that communities who are at odds in their homeland can come together here in Toronto. One hopes that the communities in Khartoum can do the same. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam Giambrone, Toronto City Councillor, Ward 18 ? Salam Shamseldeen, I just came from the city I work in.. so that I missed the meetings of the committee. I found a message in my voice mail from Deng.
I just want to tell that I have carefuly read Adam's message that you have posted above. He said " After international pressure was exerted on the Sudanese government earlier this year, most of the police were sent to Darfur in an attempt to try and get the situation under control. This left the city without adequate policing".
In this statement Adam Gimbrone sounds like he wants to justify the ugly and very irresponsible way the Sudanese authority (police, security, army etc) dealt with the killings in Khartoum or elsewhere in teh aftermath of the suspicious kiling of Africa's hero John Garang. I do strongly believe that the Sudanese authority dealt with the incidents with negligence and contempt. If I were the regiem, I would have widely made it clear to the public that every Sudanese, regardless of her/hid colour is the same for the regime & the regime will hit hard any body , be it a northerner or a southerner who dare to kill oothers. Teh current regime never cared about its citizens, it has been too busy to care about its properties. They never cared about the margin or the poor. I just wanted to say that what Adam wrote sounds like a justification for the lousy and horrible work the Sudanese government committed ever since the news of the disappearance of late Garang Helicopter. The investigation is ongoing & it sounds like a great deal of surprises will come up....
Please convey to Adam till I tell him in person my viewpoint.. Hashmi
