SUDAN: EXPELLED U.N. ENVOY SAYS HE DOESN'T REGRET DARFUR REMARKS
The Hague, 25 Oct. (AKI) - Jan Pronk, the UN envoy to Sudan who was expelled by the country's government over comments he made on the Darfur confict, told Dutch radio on Wednesday he did not regret what he said and that Khartoum had broken its peace accord. "The main thing is that a peace accord was signed in Darfur but the military are trampling all over it and are still trying to gain a military victory," Pronk said. "I have been trying constantly over the last months to expose this and this doesn't suit them."
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who recalled Pronk to New York earlier this week for clarifications, has voiced support for the UN official.
