رابط مختصر بعد ثمانية عشر شهراً من بداية حملة هيلاري كلينتون الانتخابية، عادت المشكلة التي لازمت مرشَّحة الحزب الديمقراطي منذ البداية لتلحق بها الأسبوع الماضي، عندما أعلن مدير مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي، جيمس كومي، أنَّ المكتب يراجع رسائل البريد الإلكتروني المكتشَفة حديثاً، والمتعلِّقة بخادمها الشخصي.
نعرف من الرسائل البريدية المُسرَّبة، أنَّه حتى أصدقاء هيلاري المقرَّبون اعتقدوا أنَّها "مجنونة"، لتواصلها السري عن طريق خادم كومبيوتر خاص أثناء عملها وزيرةً للخارجية.
فكتبت نيرا تاندن، المساعدة المقرَّبة وعضوة الفريق الانتقالي، في مذكرة بتاريخ يوليو/تموز 2015، كشفت عنها تسريبات "ويكيليكس" مؤخراً: "هل نعرف فعلاً مَن قال لهيلاري إنَّها يمكنها استخدام بريد إلكتروني خاص؟ وهل عوقِب ذلك الشخص عقاباً قوياً؟ هذا الأمر بأكمله جنوني تماماً".
لحسن حظ هيلاري، قرَّر مكتب التحقيق الفيدرالي في يوليو/تموز الماضي تمرير هذا التهرُّب غير القانوني من بروتوكول الأمن، وتوجيه بعض اللوم الحاد فقط.
قنبلة جديدة
شعر أتباع الحملة بالراحة هذا الصيف، عندما انتقدها كومي لكونها "متهاونة إلى أقصى حد" في تعاملها مع المعلومات السرية، ولكن قراره بعدم التوصية بتوجيه تهم جنائية قد وضع حداً للخطر الوحيد الذي كان قادراً على منعها عن الوصول لمنصب الرئاسة.
أو على الأقل، كان هذا هو الوضع حتى فجَّر كومي قنبلة جديدة. ربما يكشف الخطاب المكوَّن من ثلاث فقرات، الذي أرسله كومي للكونغرس يوم الجمعة الماضي عن وجود أدلة جديدة قد تكون مهمة، وقد تحمل صلةً قانونية بإمكانية توجيه التهم مرة ثانيةً، وهو ما كان له بالتأكيد أثر سياسي.
كانت هيلاري محلِّقةً في الجو عندما تسرَّب الخطاب. ويعني انقطاع شبكة الإنترنت اللاسلكية أنَّها ربما لم تكُن لتكتشف وجود الخطاب إطلاقاً حتى تهبط طائرتها في مدينة سيدار رابيدز في ولاية آيوا، من أجل أن إحدى محطات الحملة الانتخابية بالقرب من مكان أولى فعالياتها، بوصفها مرشَّحة رئاسية في 14 من أبريل/نيسان عام 2015.
تأخرت كثيراً في مغادرة الطائرة بينما تجمَّع المساعدون على متن الطائرة لمناقشة المسألة. وكان لا بد من اختصار وقت جلسة التصوير المُخطَّط لها مع آني ليبوفيتز. لم يضيِّع خصمها وقتاً في الإشارة إلى أنَّ مظهر أي مرشَّح رئاسي لن يبدو جيداً مطلقاً إذا كان رهن تحقيق جنائي يجريه مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي.
تجاذبات الأيام الأخيرة
جاء رد المرشح الجمهوري دونالد ترامب المبالِغ المتوقَّع في أحد التجمعات، بعد دقائقٍ في نيو هامبشير: "لم نشهد فساداً مماثلاً لفساد هيلاري كلينتون من قبل قط. علينا ألَّا ندعها تصطحب مخطَّطها الإجرامي إلى المكتب البيضاوي".
وسارع الديمقراطيون إلى التقليل من أهمية الأمر يوم الجمعة، وأشار جون بوديستا، رئيس حملة هيلاري كلينتون إلى أنَّ الجمهوريين العدوانيين ربما أكرهوا كومي على الإعلان عن مسألة صغيرة نسبياً في وجه الحملة من أجل الشفافية.
لم يكُن التحقيق قد أُغلِق رسمياً من الأساس، لذا فمن الإفراط في التبسيط القول إنَّه قد "أُعيد فتحه" كما قال الكثيرون في البداية. من المفترض أن الدليل المقصود -الذي تشير التقارير إلى أنه قد أتى من تحقيقٍ منفصل في فضيحة جنسية تخص أنتوني وينر زوج هوما عابدين (إحدى مساعدات هيلاري الرئيسيات) المنفصل عنها- قد يكون أقل ارتباطاً بقضيتها الخاصة بالأمن، لا أكثر صلةً بها.
ولكن لا شك أنَّ هذا يخلق شيئاً يتحدَّث عنه الجميع خلال الأيام التسعة المتبقية قبل يوم الانتخابات. ربما سيكافح الديمقراطيون من أجل ابتكار إجابات مقنعة عن أسئلة ستشغل عقول بعض الناخبين، إلَّا إذا تحرَّك مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي أسرع من المعتاد، لتوضيح عدم وجود شيء جديد مهم في القضية

There was an audible intake of breath among campaign followers in the summer, when Comey criticised her for being “extremely careless” in her handling of classified information, but his decision not to recommend criminal charges brought to an end the one threat deemed capable of preventing her from becoming president. That was, at least, until Comey dropped a fresh bombshell. But there is little doubt it gives everyone something to talk about in the 11 days left before election day. Unless the FBI moves far faster than is normal to clarify that there is nothing new of significance here, Democrats may also struggle to come up with convincing answers to questions that will undoubtedly weigh on the minds of some voters.
