Saudi prince said to face legal action over abduction claims
A Saudi prince is believed to have filed a criminal complaint against his cousin – son of the late King Fahd – for an alleged attack he claims left him with long term health issues. It was reported last week that Prince Sultan bin Turki has filed a criminal complaint in Switzerland against his cousin Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahd, as well as the current Saudi minister of Islamic affairs, Saleh al-Sheikh, claiming he was seriously injured as a result of a kidnapping said to have taken place in June 2003. According to the Guardian newspaper, Prince Sultan alleges he was attacked by five masked men at a palace owned by members of the Saudi royal family in Switzerland in May 2003, following a private meeting with Prince Abdulaziz and Saleh al-Sheikh. He alleges that men appeared from behind the curtains and knocked him unconscious before anaesthetising him, taking him to Geneva airport and flying him back to Riyadh. Prince Sultan alleges that he suffered medical complications and was in a critical condition in Riyadh for five days. He claims he was then incarcerated at the high security Al Hai’r prison for several months, before being allowed to return to his house in Riyadh but placed under house arrest, Prince Sultan’s lawyers reportedly told the Guardian. Little was heard of Prince Sultan until 2010, when he was moved to the US for palliative treatment, the newspaper reported. The alleged attack is said to have taken place in the wake of a series of corruption accusations Prince Sultan made against Saudi Arabia’s defence and interior ministries. The prince was scheduled to hold a public seminar in Geneva in May 2003 to reveal the full extent of corruption within the Saudi ministry of defence, and the alleged attack is said to have taken place one month later. Prince Sultan alleges he made a partial recovery and escaped Saudi custody in 2010, after which he began planning legal action against the defendants. The Guardian quoted the prince’s lawyer Pierre de Preux as saying: “A complaint has been filed on behalf of Prince Sultan in Geneva. A criminal investigation has started and is going on.” The newspaper added that it had made repeated attempts to contact the relevant parties for comment, including Saudi embassies in London and Geneva, but received just one response, from a media adviser to the Saudi embassy in London who said the case was a “private matter between these gentlemen” rather than a foreign ministry matter. Prince Sultan’s father Prince Turki, along with Saudi Arabia’s new king, Salman, belong to the powerful “Sudairi seven” – seven sons of the old King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, the first king of Saudi Arabia. It is believed the case has finally been able to be brought due to the recent enthronement of King Salman, following years of private dispute. It is the latest lawsuit to be brought against Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahd in recent months. Just last week, the case of an exiled Christian woman claiming to be one of King Fahd’s wives was heard in the UK High Court. Sixty-five-year-old Janan Harb is suing the prince for upwards of £12 million ($18 million) for breach of contract after he allegedly failed to uphold his father’s promise to look after her financially before his death in 2005.
