From the Nile Valley to the Niger Valley Other peoples came across the grasslands of the Sahara, before it was all desert. They left us cave paintings and they came from the lower Nile valley. Among those who came perhaps 3,000 or 3,500 years ago were the tribes of Ba and the Ka who may have left the Egyptian Middle Kingdom when people like the Hyskos (1700 BC) invaded with superior weaponry.
Later came iron-wielding conquerors like the Hittites (in Egypt around 1200 BC - the oldest iron sword blade is believed to be Hittite) and then the Assyrians (650 BC). Each invader of the Nile delta region, wielding iron weapons, must have provoked refugees to flee westwards, 1seeking a place where they could find the iron to make steel blades that would protect them better than their swords of bronze.
Some of these were the ancestors of people whose family names are still Ba and Ka: Ba or Bah, Baldeh, Bari, Kane, Kané, and the blacksmith names Kanté, Kamissoko, Ballo and Bagayogo. Their ancestors were all Fulanis, speaking the language called Fulfuldé or Har-Pular (the p and f are transposable linguistically: in this case, the singular is Peul and the plural is Fulani). The Fulani diaspora stretches from Somalia and the Red Sea in East Africa to the river Gambia on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, and as far south as Cameroon. There have been many Fulani migrations, for their ancestors were cattle herders following pastures and filling empty spaces
