Last updated: 09/10/2012 // Norway’s new Ambassador to Sudan, Mr. Morten Aasland, arrived in Khartoum in the middle of September. Mr Aasland met with Sudan’s Foreign Minister H E Ali Karti this week, and is looking forward to present his credentials to the president, at his convenience. - I congratulate Sudan and South Sudan on successful negotiations and the signing of very important agreements in Addis Abeba. We hope to see both states follow up and implement the agreements, to the benefit of both countries and its peoples. Norway has worked closely with Sudan on the CPA and other negotiations over the last decade. - We will continue to work with Sudan and develop our relations. We will also see how we can assist in the follow up and implementation of the Addis Abeba agreements. Economic development is one important area. In the critical oil sector, for example, Norway, itself a pioneering oil and gas nation, provides technical assistance to Sudan to increase output and improve environmental standards. Mr. Aasland is pleased to be in Sudan and looks forward to working and living in Khartoum. - It is good to be here, and to be received so well. Sudan and Norway have long standing and close relations. We have, for example, had strong academic links for decades. Many Sudanese have earned their degrees at the University of Bergen, on Norway’s western coast. Mr. Aasland has extensive experience from the Norwegian Foreign Service. His last position was at the Foreign Ministry in Oslo. He has served at embassies and delegations in Europe, in North and South America, and at the Prime Minister’s Office in Oslo.
