“kaki: I’m proud of my nation as a Sudanese citizen

    Kaki’s road to nowhere

    Hisham Al Gizouli / 16 August 2012

This is Sudan. Top international athlete Abu Baker Khamis Kaki said he’s not sad because once he had turned down an offer to be a citizen of a world’s leading country when he won the World Youth Championship at the age of 18 a few years back.

He said after his 800m final at the recent London Olympics: “I’m proud of my nation as a Sudanese citizen and have no plans to stop trying.”

The man is proud of his nation, but is his nation proud of him?

This is the question which is raised by many people around the globe after seeing such a talented athlete becoming a victim because of his principles and ethics. What an unlucky person he is! An extremely talented and determined man with an unquenchable passion for running.

The writer of this article while visiting the delegation of the Republic of Sudan in the Olympic village, was not surprised to notice that ‘sportspersons’ who have nothing to do with sports and come from nowhere, were present to represent the country in the Games. They were poorly dressed and sitting lazily and carelessly to enjoy the moment from the flat’s balcony. They were glued to the TV, but most of the time they were talking irrelevant things before Iftar. They were never seen at the venues.

You may not believe this, the secretary general of the Athletic Federation misled the International Olympic Committee and accredited himself as a coach. And this has happened with the knowledge and approval of the National Olympic Committee and the government of Sudan, led by the Minister of Youth and Sports!

The manager of sports affairs at the said ministry who was present at the village when the self appointed coach said: “No, I’m not a coach, but we do it just like that!”

What a smart man he is.

He was accredited as an athletics coach which enabled him to stay at the village while the coach of the only medal hope for the country, Kaki, was waiting outside for hours for permission to see his ward. Perhaps, it happens just in Sudan. It’s a place where you are allowed to do whatsoever you like.

And, for a responsible sports loving person to remain safe, you must keep away from the officials starting from the very top, and the two top soccer clubs Al Hilal and Al Mareekh.

Egyptian keeper Esam Al Hadhari once ridiculed the people of Sudan in front of the international media because of their dark skin. Now, he’s playing for Al Mareekh for millions of dollars. Nobody can talk to him, since he’s under the protection of the great football club!

At the end of the day if we ask as to who will protect or even assist Kaki? The answer is simple — nobody!
