A Sudanese refugee family prepares porridge near the frontier after crossing into Chad to flee attacks by militiamen, January 27, 2004. Tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees have poured across the border into Chad since December, fleeing a series of attacks by horse-riding "Janjaweed" militiamen and bombardment by government planes. The humanitarian crisis has unfolded largely unnoticed by the outside world and few aid agencies have set up operations to help.

The UN refugee agency said it would be a major challenge to cope with more than 100,000 impoverished Sudanese refugees who have spilled across the border into Chad to escape increasing violence in their homeland.
