A man from Howard County is custody, charged with killing his twin brother.
Wael Ali recently moved to Cobb County, Georgia; now in custody there, but soon he's expected to be brought back here to Maryland, to face the murder charge.
Wasel Ali, who was 19, disappeared back in August of 2007.
He was last seen at Columbia Mall , where he worked in a clothing store. Police have surveillance video of Wasel Ali and his brother Wael together at the mall on August 22nd, 2007.
“They're seen on the video together, and then leaving the mall separately. Then our suspect's time is unaccounted for, for a period of time in which we believe he committed the murder,” said Sherry Llewellyn, a spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department.
Days later, a hiker found Wasel Ali's body on a trail about two miles from the mall.
That's when Wael Ali put together a Facebook page in memory of his brother.
On it, he writes, "You still are my brother, you will forever be missed."
“It's taken a number of years, months and years to put together all of the information necessary to file the charges today,” Llewellyn said.
Police have not released a motive for the killing, but they do say on the morning they believe the murder happened, a search warrant was served at the Ali's home -- they had been accused of impersonating police officers and stealing a handgun.
Later that same day, the victim, Wasel Ali, was fired from his job at Columbia Mall and accused of stealing clothes in a theft scheme that involved his brother.
“There were a number of stressful situations on August 22, 2007, the day that we believe this young man was killed,” Llewellyn said. “We can't say for sure what led up to the murder, but we do know that those things took place.”
At the time of the murder, the brothers were also on probation -- after pleading guilty earlier in 2007 to driving a stolen car and impersonating police officers.
Prosecutors in Howard County are now working to have Wael Ali extradited back here from Georgia.
