Quote: Spanish cucumbers removed from Irish shelves
    Updated: 19:52, Tuesday, 31 May 2011

Cucumbers - Had been concerns about Spanish product
It had been feared that Spanish cucumbers were the source of an E coli outbreak in Europe, but doubts have now been cast over that claim.
A Food Safety Authority spokesperson said the Spanish cucumbers that were removed from Irish shelves were not implicated in the scare.
The FSA said it was liaising with the European Commission.
'We have no information from the EC to indicate that that any organic cucumbers from the implicated suppliers in Spain were distributed to Ireland,' said Alan Reilly, chief executive of the FSA.
'The action taken by some retailers was not requested by the FSA, but was undertaken by the retailers themselves.
'It is important to note that there have been no reported cases of human illness in Ireland associated with the German outbreak strain of E coli. Consumers do not need to be concerned.'
The FSA said there is no risk to public health and confirmed that E coli was not present in Irish-grown produce.
Lidl Ireland said that it has not been affected in anyway by the contaminated cucumbers.
However, it has removed organic Spanish cucumbers from sale in its stores as a precaution. It said it is working closely with the FSA on the matter.
SuperValu in Clonakilty, Co Cork, has confirmed that it did have Spanish organic cucumbers for sale over the past week and that they were removed from the shelves at the weekend.
The supermarket says it sourced the cucumbers through its parent company Musgraves.
The FSA has said that Dunnes Stores has also removed Spanish cucumbers from its shelves.

Quote: Germany admits Spanish cucumbers are not to blame for E coli outbreak
Source of outbreak that has killed 16 people remains a mystery as row spreads across Europe and Spain counts cost of ban on its vegetables

The mystery E coli outbreak that has killed 16 people escalated into a pan-European row on Tuesday as Germany admitted that tainted Spanish cucumbers were not the source of the outbreak after all.

Spain's agriculture minister Rosa Aguilar ate a homegrown cucumber on live television as she railed against a suggestion by Hamburg scientists last week that Iberian cucumbers were likely to blame for the outbreak, which claimed its first non-German victim on Thursday when a Swedish woman died shortly after returning from Germany.

"Germany accused Spain of being responsible for the E coli contamination in Germany, and it did it with no proof, causing irreparable damage to the Spanish production sector," said Aguilar.

French health minister Xavier Bertrand demanded greater transparency from Spain and Germany after three people in France became ill.

More than 1,000 people have been infected, 373 of whom are seriously ill.

Spanish farmers say fear of their produce is spreading in Europe. Customers are cancelling orders, and farm workers are being laid off in a country with 21% unemployment.

Some 150,000 tons of Spanish fruit and vegetables are piling up every week, with losses running at €200m (£175m) a week, according to Fepex, Spain's fruit and vegetable export body.

Spanish media reported that Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Hungary, Sweden, Belgium and Russia have been banning Spanish cucumbers after what scientists say is one of the largest E coli outbreaks.

Spain would be demanding compensation for all European vegetable producers who had experienced losses because of the health scare, said Aguilar.

Within hours of her eating cucumber on television, the German agriculture secretary Robert Kloos said at an EU farm ministers meeting in Hungary: "Germany recognises that the Spanish cucumbers are not the cause."

Earlier, Spanish vegetable growers accused German authorities of covering up the real cause of the outbreak and asked the prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, to intervene. Hospital authorities in the northern Spanish city of San Sebastián said they were investigating a suspected case of E coli in a patient who recently returned from Germany.

The source of the virulent strain of the bacteria is still not known, but scientists said the suspicions about vegetables or salads were well-founded since cattle manure used in fertiliser can harbour E coli. Hamburg's state health minister, Cornelia Prüfer-Storcks, who was the first official to point the finger at Spain last Thursday, has insisted that she was right to go public with preliminary test results from the Hamburg institute for hygiene and environment suggesting Spanish cucumbers were the source.

"It would have been irresponsible to withhold a well-founded suspicion given the high number of illnesses. Protecting life is more important than protecting financial interests," she said. But Prüfer-Storcks said tests on two cucumbers had found a different strain of E coli from that carried by patients in the city.

European Union officials have said the cucumbers could have been contaminated at any point along the route from Spain to Germany.

As bickering continues, the death toll rises. In Boras, Sweden, authorities announced the death of woman in her 50s who was admitted on 29 May after a trip to Germany. In Paderborn, Germany, the local council said an 87-year-old woman who also had other ailments had died. One American tourist has also been hospitalised in the Czech Republic with symptoms of E coli infection after also visiting Germany.

The national disease control centre in Germany said 373 people were sick with the most serious form of the outbreak, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a rare complication arising from an infection most commonly associated with E coli. That figure was up from the 329 reported on Monday.

Susanne Glasmacher, a spokeswoman for the Robert Koch Institute, said another 796 people have been affected by the bacteria making a total of more than 1,150 people infected. Germany's federal institute for risk assessment is still warning consumers in northern Germany to avoid all cucumbers, lettuces and raw tomatoes.

BOOSTER SHOTS: Oddities, musings and news from the health world

    E. coli deaths in Europe grow; link to Spanish cucumbers debunked

By Janet Stobart, Los Angeles Times / For the Booster Shots blog

    10:53 AM PDT, May 31, 2011

    advertisement

LONDON — Cases of E. coli-related illness are springing up around Europe, particularly in northern Germany, causing 16 deaths so far and infecting more than 1,000 people, according to the Guardian.

The bacteria are commonly linked to raw or undercooked meat or to unwashed vegetables and fruit. Cucumbers imported into Germany from Spain had initially been blamed for this outbreak, but new evidence suggested that isn't the case.

The deaths have been attributed to hemolytic-uremic syndrome, which can occur after infection with some especially virulent strains of E. coli. The World Health Organization has warned countries about the severity of the condition, one of the more dangerous complications of E. coli poisoning.

Meanwhile, European health and agriculture authorities are closely monitoring their raw food stocks, the Daily Mail reported. Extra care is being urged in the handling of raw salads and fruit, particularly if they are imported. A question-and-answer from the BBC offers some details.

Of the thousand or more people who have been infected in Europe, most of their illness can be linked to recent travels to Germany. Health experts are warning people to watch out for signs of illness and to consult a doctor immediately if they occur. Classic symptoms include severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea, sometimes containing blood.

Imports of Spanish fruits and vegetables have been banned in several European countries as experts try to locate the source of the bacteria. They're attempting to determine whether the bacteria came from Spain or were picked up on the way to the German marketplace. Already, the furor has caused rancor among Spanish producers and a huge loss of income for the Spanish economy.

By Tuesday afternoon, scientists were said to be focusing on a couple of fruit and vegetable farms in Spain. Meanwhile, German doctors said they expected fatalities and the number of the infected to increase.

Quote: Czech Republic withdraws Spanish cucumbers from shop shelves

Health police sources in the Czech Republic have confirmed that Spanish cucumbers were imported into their country from Germany on 24th and 26th May, and have ordered them to be withdrawn from all the country's distribution channels without further delay.

The National Agency of Agricultural and Food Products said in a announcement that it has "given instructions that prohibit the delivery of the shipment in impeach (24th May), and in the case of cucumbers that are already in retail outlets, they are to be immediately removed."

"We are gathering information. under current legislation we do not know how numerous were sold and how numerous were not," said the food agency's spokesperson, Michal Spacil.
Although the exact number of imported cucumbers is unknown, at least 120 units from the May 24th consignment have not yet been found, whereas 96 cucumbers from the 26th May consignment have already been withdrawn from supermarket shelves.

The Czech food agency has not yet detected any contamination by the dangerous bacterium E. coli, which has caused ten deaths in Germany and infected another 1,000 people.
The Czech police sources explained that the cucumbers were sold to the Czech company Country Life, which has its own chain of stores, but also acts as an intermediate selling to third parties.
Since the cucumber crisis erupted in Germany, Czech food chains began to withdraw cucumbers of Spanish origin from their shelves as a preventative measure.
Austria also has started an operation to remove Spanish cucumbers, tomatoes and aubergines from 33 stores that acquired their products from German wholesalers, who had bought Spanish products where the dangerous bacteria were found.

Swedish woman killed by toxic cucumbers as E.coli outbreak spreads beyond Germany and death toll hits 15

    By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 4:08 PM on 31st May 2011

Over 400 ill in Germany from deadly food bug
Tomatoes and lettuce believed to be affected too
Russia bans imports of some vegetables from Spain and Germany
A food poisoning bug found in cucumbers which has killed 15 and made over 400 people ill in Germany has now claimed its first reported fatality in another country.

A Swedish hospital said today that a woman in her 50s died there after being infected by E.coli linked to tainted vegetables.

Officials at the hospital in Boras, southwestern Sweden, say the woman was admitted there on May 29 after a trip to Germany.

A worker unloads boxes of cucumbers for exportation in El Ejido, southwest Spain. E.coli has been found in some cucumbers in Germany imported from Spain

Destroyed cucumbers lie in a greenhouse in Balerma, Almeria, southeastern Spain. A food bug found on Spanish cucumbers has killed 14 in Germany and made over 300 more ill

Europeans have traded blame over the source of the deadly bacterial outbreak but the pathogen has been identified on cucumbers imported from Spain - and it is feared tomatoes and lettuce could be affected too.

Russia has now banned imports of some fresh vegetables from Spain and Germany out of fear they could be contaminated.

Austrian authorities sent inspectors to supermarkets yesterday to make sure Spanish vegetables suspected of contamination have been taken off shelves, while in Italy the country's paramilitary Carabinieri has been on the lookout since Saturday for suspected contaminated imports from Spain, the Netherlands and other European countries.

Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, a European Union spokeswoman, said German authorities had identified cucumbers from the Spanish cities of Almeria and Malaga as possible sources of contamination and that a third suspect batch, originating either in the Netherlands or in Denmark and traded in Germany, is also under investigation.

In Germany, which has recorded all known deaths, officials said they know that at least some Spanish cucumbers tainted with enterohaemorrhagic E.coli, also known as EHEC, have carried the bacteria, although they still have not been able to determine the exact source.

An EU official who spoke on condition of anonymity due to standing regulations, said the transport chain was long, and the cucumbers from Spain could have been contaminated at any point along the route.

Spain, meanwhile, went on the defensive, saying there was no proof that the E.coli outbreak has been caused by Spanish vegetables.

'You can't attribute the origin of this sickness to Spain,' Spain's Secretary of State for European Affairs, Diego Lopez Garrido told reporters in Brussels. 'There is no proof and that's why we are going to demand accountability from those who have blamed Spain for this matter.'

The World Health Organization described the outbreak as 'very large and very severe,' and urged countries to work together to get to the root of the problem.

A farmer shreds lettuce in a field in Ronneberg, Germany, on the weekend. Tons of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes in the north of Germany have been destroyed due to worries over the bacterial outbreak

A sample of tomato is examined for the EHEC strain in Oldenburg, Germany. Tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers are being examined for the dangerous intestinal bacteria that has rapidly spread around Germany
'Almost all cases being reported in other countries have a link to travel or residence in Germany,' WHO food safety expert Hilde Kruse said, noting that cases of bloody diarrhoea caused by EHEC have also been reported in Denmark, Sweden, France, the U.K., the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Andreas Hensel, president of Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, told ZDF television that 'we have found the so-called EHEC pathogens on cucumbers, but that does not mean that they are responsible for the whole outbreak'.

Spanish Health Minister Leire Pajin stressed there were no Spanish cases reported and urged Germany to speed up its probe and establish proof of what has caused the outbreak. Germany's allegations 'create alarm and affect the producers of a country without any evidence', she said.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said there was 'great uncertainty' about the suspicion that Danish cucumbers may be involved but carried out a lab test to reassure consumers. Results are expected today.

A worker piles up boxes of cucumbers for export at a fruits and vegetables cooperative in El Ejido last week
In the Netherlands, which exports more than half of the 1.6 billion cucumbers it produces each year to Germany, panicked growers went into damage control mode after all shipments were stopped.

While the National Agricultural Association met with the deputy agriculture secretary to discuss the situation, a group of cucumber growers invited an independent German institute to carry out tests in hopes it would prove their produce is safe.

Marian Bestelink, spokeswoman for the Dutch Food and Wares Authority, said investigations of a Dutch cucumber grower and Dutch warehouse did not uncover any traces of the bacteria.

'So we can definitely cross this Dutch wholesaler and this Dutch grower off the list of possible sources for the infection,' she said.

With the cause of the outbreak still unclear, some countries have taken precautionary measures.

Russia's chief sanitary agency yesterday banned the imports of cucumbers, tomatoes and fresh salad from Spain and Germany pending further notice. It said in a statement that it may even ban the imports of fresh vegetables from all European Union member states due to the lack of information about the source of infection.

Austrian authorities sent inspectors to 33 organic supermarkets yesterday to make sure Spanish vegetables suspected of contamination have been removed. The move came after a recall and ban on sales of cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplants that originated in Spain and were delivered to stores in Austria by German companies.

Italy's agriculture lobby, Coldiretti, used the outbreak to urge Italians to support their local growers and avoid imports.

Currently, Italian supermarkets are full of peaches, apricots, cherries and plums from Spain. As for pickles and cucumbers, Italy imported some 8 million kilograms from Spain last year.

Czech officials said tests on 120 potentially tainted Spanish cucumbers pulled off shelves on Sunday are expected to be concluded in two days. No illnesses have been reported.

The E.coli (EHEC) bacteria as seen under a microscope
In Poland, officials said yesterday that a woman has been hospitalised in serious condition after returning from a trip to the northern German city of Hamburg, where at least 467 cases of intestinal infection have been recorded.

On Sunday, authorities said those included 91 cases of the more severe hemolytic uremic syndrome, known as HUS, but the officials noted yesterday that the number of new diarrhoea cases was declining. HUS is a rare complication arising from infection associated with the E. coli bacterium.

EU spokesman Frederic Vincent said on Sunday that two greenhouses in Spain that were identified as the source of the contaminated cucumbers had ceased activities.

The water and soil there are being analysed to see whether they were the problem, and the results are expected today or tomorrow, Vincent said.

Do we know yet how e-coli got on the cucumber, etc? Surely it has to have a source other than the soil it grew in, no? I can't see in the article that they know anything other than people are getting ill and it may be from veg...

David, Malaga. Please get your facts straight. To begin with there are no cases in Spain. All the cases are people in Germany or foreigners who picked it up while in Germany. Germany has accused Spain but with no proof. In fact the most probable cause is cross contamination inside Germany. I hope that once this is all sorted out and it is proven that this contamination did not come from Spain, Germany will be made to pay compensation for all the money Spanish farmers are losing.

Tests have now shown that cucumbers from Spain ARE NOT responsble for the outbreak here so those quick to jump in the anti-Spain bandwagon, wind your knecks in.

The cucumbers eaten in Spain look nothing like the ones we eat in England, They are much shorter and fatter and even the colour is lighter with little nodules on the skin. Not really good for salads or sandwiches so I´m a little suspicious about the origin of the outbreak considering that we only have 1 known case in Spain. Sounds like a case of pass the buck.
