UNPROVOKED ATTACKS AGAINST WOMEN AND KIDS IN DARFUR GO UNNOTICED BY INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Falls Church, VA (United States) — November 4, 2010 — In the past 24 hours, Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy has received tragic news regarding several attacks against women and children in the western part of Darfur, Sudan. Various sources have confirmed that three separate attacks were carried out during the week from Sunday, October 31, 2010 to Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in and around the city of Al-geneina in the western part of Darfur State, where tens of thousands of refugees have settled. Details of the three attacks are as follows:

An unidentified individual murdered Ms. Huda Abdalla, a 21 year old female, at her home inside El-mashtel Refugee Camp in the town of Ardamata, a few miles east of Al-geneina City. The individual entered Ms. Abdalla’s "makeshift" home at approximately 2am and emptied his machine gun of its bullets into the sleeping body of Ms. Abdalla, who died instantly. Witnesses claimed the gunman, who was said to have run away after killing Ms. Abdalla, might have been a Sudanese Army soldier. It was believed by these witnesses that the soldier was a rival of the victim’s husband who took revenge on Ms. Abdalla for refusing to marry him. Witnesses added that the incident had been reported to the local police but the authorities showed little interest in or cooperation regarding the reported murder. Ms. Abdalla’s relatives buried her body on Tuesday, November 2 in the afternoon.

A second attack took place on Sunday evening, October 31, 2010, against a family living in the Kerdang Refugee Camp, only a few miles southeast of Al-geneina. The family members’ names have not yet been disclosed. A gunman, who has been identified as a citizen of the country of Chad who joined the Sudanese Army a few years ago, randomly attacked a family of seven members with his machine gun. All 7 members of the family, including the pregnant mother, were killed by the gunman, leaving the death toll from just this one attack at 8 innocent human lives. The reasons for the gunman’s attack still remain a mystery, but he was taken to an army camp, where no one knows how he will be treated. The number of innocent victims killed by this one attacker makes this one of the most shocking incidents of the week in that area.

The third reported attack was against a displaced, middle aged female who lived with relatives inside Hilat Sheikh Ibrahim in the town center of Ardamata. At approximately 11pm, witnesses say an armed man in an army uniform shot the unnamed female in her relative’s house at about the time many people were getting into bed. Neighbors described the man as drunk and added that he had recently deployed to the Ardamata area along with thousands of battalion soldiers. Unfortunately the as-yet unnamed shooter was able to leave the scene and remains at large as of the time of this report.

While international and media attention has shifted to the southern Sudan referendum, witnesses claim that danger in the western and southern regions of Darfur has significantly intensified. It is believed that the Sudanese Army and noted allies in the Janjaweed militia are responsible for the heightened terror and have freedom to oppress, humiliate and kill innocent Darfuris at will. The attention of the international community has been entirely absent and witnesses say that the UNAMID Forces are doing nothing to stop the attacks.
