Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced his resignation today, signaling the end of 13 years of Labor Party rule in Britain and the likely beginning of an unprecedented coalition government between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.
Brown told a news conference outside 10 Downing St. that he was stepping down after an election Thursday that left his party in second place.
"It was a privilege to serve, and yes, I love the job, not for its prestige, its titles and its ceremony, which I do not love at all," Brown said. "No, I love the job for its potential to make this country I love fairer, more tolerant, more green, more democratic, more prosperous and more just, truly a greater Britain."
