    Job Description

    BBC Arabic offers audiences a multimedia service across TV, radio and online. The channel is modern in style and outlook. It adheres to BBC values of accuracy, impartiality, balance and speed. It has broad appeal, free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures.

    We have created a new multimedia environment in which journalists are expected to move between platforms. We are now looking for more Broadcast Journalists with enthusiasm and flexibility to join our unique business.

    You’ll originate, research, write and translate as well as adapt news items, packages and other programme material. You’ll offer ideas for coverage and be responsible for conducting interviews and writing analysis and features.

    It is essential that you have recent, relevant journalistic experience of working in one or more of these platoforms: Radio, TV or online. You’ll also need to have Arabic as your first or #####alent language, have full comprehension of English and have experience of translating from English into Arabic in a news environment. You’ll have in depth current understanding of Middle Eastern and international current affairs.

    Reports To: Strand Editor or Senior Broadcast Journalist

    Hours: Rota pattern including weekend and night working

    ORGANISATION:

    BBC Arabic offers a service of video/audio/text across a range of media which include TV, Radio and Online. The service is multi-media in operation for daily newsgathering and daily, weekly and long-term planning, whilst output streams are run by single media teams, teams working in collaboration with each other, or sometimes by single teams.

    Working in a team of journalists in a multi-media environment, Broadcast Journalists may be line managed by the Strand Editor or a Senior Broadcast Journalist, and on a daily basis may report to Senior Broadcast Journalist.
    All BBC Arabic staff may be required to work across a range of output according to skills and experience.

    JOB PURPOSE:

    To originate, research, prepare, produce and present items, packages, interviews, discussions, complete programmes, background, analysis and features, in video, audio or text for any of television, radio, online and other media. To ensure that any material for which the post holder is responsible meets the standards required by the BBC. To act up as required. Broadcast Journalists are expected to have read and understood the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines.

    DUTIES

    1. To research, write, translate, edit or adapt items, stories or programme material

    2. To find contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of material and/or actuality, as appropriate and to the required specification. To perform the duties of interview producer or guest booker for periods of time.

    3. To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required. To think through and around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.

    4. To offer ideas for stories and items, programmes and series, attending pre-programme and planning meetings as required. To suggest new angles and formats on existing stories in order to bring them to life for the audience.

    5. To understand the Service’s strategy and to suggest ideas appropriate to its distinctive style and content.

    6. To liaise closely with other team members and with contributors, reporters and stringers and when commissioning material to give effective guidance and feedback.

    7. To undertake pre and post production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. After appropriate training, use a range of video, audio & digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.

    8. To perform at the microphone with or without a script, conduct interviews and chair discussions, live or pre-recorded.

    9. To voice and edit packages at the desktop.

    10. To produce graphics in collaboration with graphic designers.

    11. All BJs may be required on occasion, to travel inside and outside the UK on short reporting or field producing trips and assignments and to spend longer periods of time in the target area.

    12. With appropriate training all BJs may be required to work with or move to other programme teams on a multi-media basis and work across a range of skills and in a flexible manner. To occasionally act up as cover for Senior Broadcast Journalists.

    13. To observe and carry out any requirement outlined in the BBC News health safety and security policy and specifically to conduct risk assessments when appropriate.

    14. To be familiar with different technical systems, including news production systems, and to show a willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    · A full command and up to date knowledge of spoken and written modern standard Arabic, as first or #####alent language.

    · A thorough knowledge and understanding of news and current affairs in the target area. A good knowledge of, and interest in, international and British current affairs, particularly insofar as they affect the target areas.
    · A very good knowledge of English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.

    · Recent experience as a journalist, relevant to the target area, with a good knowledge of production techniques.

    · Ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media.

    · Good keyboard/basic computer skills and the ability to acquire technical skills and to operate technical equipment is essential. Familiarity with the Internet and an awareness of the potential of new technology is also necessary.

    · A good broadcasting voice and the ability to acquire the appropriate presentation style is desirable.

    · Wide and up to date familiarity with the areas to which the Service broadcasts and an in-depth understanding of the areas history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience. An extensive knowledge of the media situation in the target area.

    · A thorough understanding of the editorial aims and policies of BBC journalistic output and a willingness to adopt BBC Values.

    · The ability to work fast, accurately and under pressure.

    · To be able to work away from base - filming and on outside broadcasts.

    · Knowledge of the law as it applies to journalism.

    · An awareness of BBC policy on Health and Safety and Security.

    BBC ARABIC: BACKGROUND INFORMATION

    In March 2008, BBC World Service launched a TV News channel transmitting in Arabic to the Middle East. The channel complements and enhances the existing WS Arabic Radio and Online service and, together, they form a single, new, multi-platform offering based in London.
    BBC Arabic TV is currently looking for two highly-talented Strand Editors to continue its commitment to bringing a new and modern multi-media news operation to a modern Middle East.

    Strand Editors are responsible for news output and newsgathering/planning. Working to the News Editor, they look after the live output of the channel, or the newsgathering and planning operations. Strand Editors are members of the Arabic Service management team.

    The ideal candidates will have experience of managing news at a senior level. You will contribute to the strategy and the editorial direction of Arabic TV. You will have hands-on experience of live broadcast journalism, especially the co-ordination and production of breaking news. You will have experience of managing and leading large teams of journalists, presenters, and reporters working at base or in the field. You will have a good understanding of planning resources and working to a budget. You will work closely with the rest of the Arabic Service and with BBC News.


    ORGANISATION

    Working in a multi-media environment, Strand Editors constantly lead and strive to improve the editorial and production standards of the output, provide the highest possible standards of management and leadership and contribute to the overall strategy of BBC Arabic. All BBC Arabic staff may be required to work in different areas of the department, according to skills and experience.

    JOB PURPOSE

    Strand Editors (Output) may at any time be responsible for whole strands or sections of output, and will be expected to contribute to the planning and newsgathering process.

    The Strand Editor (Newsgathering) is responsible for the planning and newsgathering for BBC Arabic.

    All Strand Editors are key members of the senior management team and are responsible for editorial and managerial standards. They contribute to the overall strategy and direction of BBC Arabic. They are responsible for development of their own teams and the smooth introduction of change. As one of a team of Strand Editors they collaborate with colleagues across BBC Arabic and with other parts of the BBC.

    MAIN DUTIES – STRAND EDITORS (OUTPUT)

    1. To produce first class news output and take day to day responsibility for the running of the output team. 2. To drive the news agenda of the day, originating and developing lively and engaging programmes which reflect the significant events, as well as key issues and trends.
    3. To produce news or current affairs programmes in a lively and creative way.
    4. To work with the Editors in other output streams to ensure editorial co-ordination and coherence across multimedia output.
    5. To lead the coverage of major events for BBC Arabic and make sure that the World Service Newsroom is alerted to all breaking stories.
    6. To take an active part in programmes when required.

    MAIN DUTIES – STRAND EDITOR (NEWSGATHERING)

    1. To manage the newsgathering operation, developing and maintaining high professional standards of journalism and, in conjunction with Strand Editors (Output), ensuring consistency of policy, style and content.
    2. To manage our overseas bureaux to ensure the efficient flow of material and information to London and vice versa.
    3. To oversee the deployment of newsgathering staff and logistical arrangements. To oversee daily and long term planning and co-ordinate coverage of events for the range of output.
    4. To be responsible for negotiating rates, commissioning and contracting freelance and staff crews and facilities including live links.
    5. To lead a team delivering a range of content for BBC Arabic including events coverage.
    6. To also work with other parts of the Africa & Middle East Region and the wider BBC and Global News Division on joint planning of major stories, events, seasons in a way that can enhance the global offer and to help ensure that BBC Arabic collaborates full with the BBC newsgathering operation.
    7. To work with the other Strand Editors to commission features.

    MAIN DUTIES - ALL STRAND EDITORS

    1. To monitor and ensure the quality of programmes and content, ensuring that journalistic standards and BBC editorial policies are maintained and their suitability to the network sustained.
    2. To come up with innovative ideas and initiative to contribute to the planning and the development of BBC Arabic Television output.
    3. To assist the News Editor/Head Arabic Service in developing strategies for BBC Arabic; to communicate and implement those strategies and assist in leading the team to that end.
    4. To ensure a steady flow of material from the Service into the central World Service output and wider BBC and provide advice to other BBC departments on Arabic affairs.
    5. To represent the Arabic Service at World Service and wider BBC editorial meetings.
    6. To push forward the BBC’s values and disseminate the goals and objectives of the BBC.
    7. To ensure that the Arabic Service meets the BBC's Value for Money remit and that all editorial and programme making decisions are within their respective budgets, through long-term management of programme resources, monitoring of budgets.
    8. To travel as required on overseas assignments, to plan reporting trips and ensure proper risk assessments are done, or to possibly present and report on location.
    9. To play a leading part in the recruitment of staff and to work with the News Editor/Head Arabic Service to ensure the induction, training, supervision and motivation of staff; to set objectives and to appraise; to set and maintain standards of work through briefings, playbacks and programme reviews.
    10. To ensure safe working practices and the observance of health and safety policies.
    11. To take a responsibility for diversity issues.
    12. To follow closely technological developments, keeping BBC Arabic at the leading edge of the media.
    13. To support the administrative staff in ensuring that the rotas are staffed in accordance with operational needs.
    14. To oversee and carry out special projects as requested by News Editor and Head BBC Arabic, and deputise as required.

    REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE - STRAND EDITOR (OUTPUT)

    · Must have considerable practical experience of live broadcast journalism in the medium they are responsible for (TV or Radio or Online) in a senior editorial role, especially the production of live, breaking news stories.
    · Ability to produce news programmes in a lively, creative and innovative way.
    · High level of editorial judgement with the ability to prioritise news stories, and to make major decisions under the pressure of live output.
    · Ability to work well and calmly in a live transmission format; able to handle a rapidly changing running order, and have the temperament to enjoy the process.

    REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE - STRAND EDITOR (NEWSGATHERING)

    · Considerable experience of working in a senior role in newsgathering, leading a team of reporters and correspondents in the field, in multi locations, including overseas.
    · Experience of managing a team of journalists remotely with proven ability to motivate and develop staff.
    · Demonstrable understanding of the logistics of overseas operations and the deployment of staff and resources.
    · Demonstrable understanding of safety issues in the field, and to promote and ensure adherence to safety guidelines as set out by the BBC.

    REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE - ALL STRAND EDITORS
    · Editorial awareness and judgement which reflects the BBC’s Values and willingness to adopt BBC Editorial guidelines.
    · Fluency in both written and spoken Arabic (as first or #####alent language) and English and the ability to communicate effectively.
    · Detailed current knowledge of the Middle East, media market and the changing needs of the audience. The ability to anticipate changes in the media market and plan and guide BBC Arabic’s output accordingly. · Thorough knowledge of British and international current affairs.
    · The ability to work calmly and effectively in an environment where news is constantly changing and being updated. Ability to make major decisions with authority and under pressure.
    · Experience of leading the coverage of major news events
