Quote: JUBA, March 5 2010 (Gurtong) – The former President of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi on Thursday gave a very strong speech calling upon Southerners to unite and relinquish their personal interest which are bound to differ.
“Leaders should strive to leave a good legacy behind after they leave the seat, keeping in mind that leaders come and leaders go but the country and the people remain forever”. Said Moi. He cautioned the people not to forget their suffering since time immemorial and that whatever the outcome of the elections the results must be respected because it’s what the people have decided and people must maintain their unity despite the political parties they have.
“And of course SPLM should win with landslide victory to form your own government, I would have wanted in totally SPLM to be the one this time, in future you can (divide) but when you are fighting for a course please remain united. Don’t let your difference to divide you.” Stressed Moi. The Former President added that President Jomo Kenyatta inspired the people of Kenya to unite, in the same way, he urged the people of Southern Sudan not to let tribalism derail their goals or divide them in anyway because tribalism has upset Africa.
“After these elections you are preparing for the referendum and I know before that one comes SPLM must remain united and let that unity be your strength. You are the President my brother Salva Kiir in this exercise it is the people who shall decide and whatsoever that decision is you must always remain Southern Sudan.” He emphasized.
“I want to hear that many children are going to school in all corners of this country, and I want to hear that you are exploiting your natural resources for the benefit of the people and that this country is soon connected with good road networks and that electricity will be supplied to every locality.” Added Moi.
“We are all looking forward to a bright future of this country and let no one stand in the way as an agent for disunity, if somebody does that history and many future generations of this land will pass a very harsh judgment on him/her”. Moi pointed out.
Moi pointed out to President Kiir that the greatest burden is placed on his (Kiir’s) shoulders to guide the people of Southern Sudan on which direction to go.
President Salva Kiir acknowledged that wisdom from a former President like Daniel Arap Moi is very important for the people of Southern Sudan. |
