معرض جديد" Negotiating Boundaries: Visual Marks as Alternative Narratives "نيويورك

Negotiating Boundaries: Visual Marks as Alternative Narratives

(October…. 2009) Centerpoint Gallery at the Rudolf Steiner Bookstore, 138 West 15th Street, New York, NY 10011, presents Negotiating Boundaries: Visual Marks as Alternative Narratives : The Art of Khalid Kodi, New Works of Appropriating Story. The exhibition is open to the public and features small- and large-scale paintings, drawings and mixed media on paper. A portion of the proceeds will support Darfur Rehabilitation Project, Cutting Edge Art & Culture Works also the Anthroposophical Society (Anthroposophy NYC). An opening reception will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009, from 3:00-6:00PM. The retrospective will close Saturday,
January 21st. To RSVP and for gallery appointments, contact Blanche Foster, 973-274-9424.

Khalid Kodi, long recognized as a prolific Sudanese-American master artist, has emerged as a central figure working on multi/cross-cultural concepts. He uses contemporary themes for traditional story telling with references to magical realism, intricately layered in textures, symbols also figures and by synthesizing colors/rhythms.

Kodi’s past series have included works on human phenomena such as wars, genocide and their impact on human societies. These works incorporate sculpture, paintings, installations and environmental sites, also were featured in many national and international venues. Through his work, Kodi advocates for and humanizes victims of war and genocide in Africa and exposes these events to the larger international community. His exhibitions carry an outreach and educational message that promote peace, human dignity and celebrate a rich culture.

Khalid Kodi was born in The Sudan, immigrating to the United States in the early ‘90s. As an African living in America, he has embraced both cultures, communicating elements of both to one another, and using his art as a forum to teach and to bring issues of the civil war in The Sudan to his Sudanese community all over the world. Khalid Kodi is an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Boston College, and a resident artist in the African-American Master Artist in Residence Program (AAMARP), an adjunct of the Department of African-American Studies, Northeastern University.

Re: معرض جديد" Negotiating Boundaries: Visual Marks as Alternative Narratives "نيويو (Re: Khalid Kodi)

    ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS
    DARFUR REHABILITATION PROJECT (DRP),

a recognized 501(c)3 charitable organization based in Newark, New Jersey, was founded by a
group of Darfurians living in the United States who are deeply concerned over the human rights tragedy now occurring in their homeland in western Sudan. Members of DRP come from various ethnic populations native to the region. Through this diversity, DRP is able to effectively communicate a personal understanding of the current catastrophe also ways in which the genocide has affected them personally, their families and communities across The Sudan.

Members of DARFUR REHABILITATION PROJECT remain closely connected with the issues on the ground. Family members are in the refugee camps, live throughout The Sudan and in neighboring countries. Although the steps to peace and security are great, DARFUR REHABILITATION PROJECT offers a fresh viewpoint and innovative responses in tackling what has become a tragedy desperate for global attention.

    *****

CUTTING EDGE ART AND CULTURE WORKS

is an international non-profit and non-governmental organization that operates primarily in African countries.
Cutting Edge draws upon the creative use of cutting edge artistic theories and tools on one hand and on sustainable physical and architectural means on the other hand, to approach and address current crises, needs, developments and transitions in African societies and countries.

The aim is to create public permanent and temporary arts and programs that recognize the power of culture in transforming communities. These programs and art creations will also be of value in people’s everyday lives.

    *****
DRP wishes to thank the Artists, Betty Blayton and Khalid Kodi for their generosity in using their Wonderful Art to call attention to our worthy cause; to members of the Anthroposophical Society (Anthroposophy NYC), who extended every courtesy in order to make our stay at the Centerpoint Gallery successful. Special thanks are given to their Board Member, Joyce Reilly, who made it possible for our event to occur. DRP is also indebted to L'Altruist a group of forward-thinking, proactive Sudanese professionals who are offering their multi-talented gifts in a meaningful way www.laltruist.org. And to all who show stead-fast support…..Thank you, sincerely. If you are new to DRP: Welcome!
