[Asim Gorashi Trio Wows Crowd In ‘Desert Dreams' Concert Bandar Seri Begawan - Words such as amazing, incredible, fantastic were responses from the audience following the "Desert Dreams" concert done by the Asim Gorashi Trio over the weekend. Organised by the Brunei Music Society, the concert saw the trio serenading the audience with a truly memorable and soulful performance in the form of jazz fused with Sudanese folkloric songs. Linda Galbraith, one of the audience members, when speaking of the performance was quoted as saying, "Fascinating, very eclectic style of symphonised African music with lots of other styles. You get a sense that it's improvised, yet it's really well coordinated between the three players." Another member of the audience, James Clines, said, "It was really good and #######ing to listen to a fusion of traditional Sudanese music with jazz. I think that was really professional. They were all good, had good energy, and worked well with each other. "Asim had an interesting use of vocal techniques which wag really #######ing " he added The Asim Gorashi trio performed a set list of 12 songs, including "Sigin Sigin", a song from the Gumuz tribe in Sudan, followed by "Dalaib" in the Dalaib style from Africa and "Torrey", a song from the Baggara Tribe in West Sudan. In an interview with the front man himself, Asim Gorashi said, "I like Brunei very much. I heard of Brunei in the 1970s, and the Sultan is very popular with the Sudanese people. "Yesterday, we had a good workshop at local schools for the Islamic way of using music," He said. "You can use it in a good way for manners and for obtaining a spiritual pathway. "Music is the only international language that can bring people together. It sends a very abstract message, from heart to heart, spirit to spirit, body to body. It comes from the heart, body and soul." The Brunei Music Society's next concert will be held on February 12, 2010, and will feature Richard Hand and Ileana Ruhemann on guitar and flute. It was also announced that Peter Korbel will be performing on guitar on April 9-10, 2010, while the violin duo, Rafal Zambryzcki-Payne and Agnieszka Marucha will be performing on May 1, 2010 -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
