JUBA, 31 August (Gurtong) – South Sudan is set to have a fledgling movie industry following the registration last week of a production company by the Government of Southern Sudan.
The company, SSOLLYWOOD, is an acronym for the South Sudan movie industry, an #####alent of the United States of America’s Hollywood.
The Chief Executive Officer and founder of SSOLLYWOOD Florence Akello John said the inaugural movie is set for shooting and screening in the whole of South Sudan and will be available in English, Arabic and some of the local languages.
“We are all set for the shooting of the inaugural movie titled Madina Hallam, which gives the story of the transformation of life from one point to another. The actors and actresses are already in Juba and the scripts have already been written. We hope to start of with documentaries before venturing into other productions”, said Akello.
She explained that she conceived the idea of setting up a movie industry in South Sudan way back in 2005 upon the sudden death of the late SPLM leader, Dr John Garang De Mabior, saying that she felt that recording and preserving the history of South Sudan is vital for future generations.
“The various features we are planning to work on will be valuable reference material on the history of South Sudan”, said Akello, who is also a member of the SPLM Liberation Council.
She told Gurtong that her organisation seeks to change the perception by many that South Sudan is not a safe place to settle in.
“Despite the fact that life in South Sudan is not easy and everybody feels like running away from it, the situation is not as bad as it has been pictured. I am sure that anyone who visits South Sudan would want to settle here as it is now peaceful”, she said.
“Life is like reading a book with a huge volume. You might ask yourself whether you can finish the book but with time, you get the urge to open the next page and this is how South Sudan is”, she added.
She added that her organisation also aims at giving the youth something to do instead of idling in towns and the rural areas due to unemployment.
“I will have a total of 12 actors and actresses on a permanent basis while other positions will be filled as the need arise”, said Akello.
“I want to be an agent of change in South Sudan through music and peace initiatives because all we want is peace. I know I will not capture the attention of the whole of South Sudan but at least if I can bring change to a section, the message will be spread to the rest”, she concluded. |
