Adieu Marc
|
It is strange that one feels it when it approaches. Marc had had a severe headache a couple of days earlier and had asked me to drive him home and I did it without hesitation as he had driven me home countless of times when I chickened and complained about the bad weather. Marc, his wife Rose and their three children have been more than friends to me – they were my only family in Canada for the last ten years.
I met Marc when I got my first real job in Canada in a piston manufacturing company- Zollner Pistons- here in Leamington ten years ago and we became good friends the first day I punched out my time card. He, a Québécois and spoke mostly in French with me, stood out as stranger in the lunch room as I, like him, spoke accented English. “Be yourself”, he would always advise me.
I did not know what to make of the sense of sadness I felt when his wife, vacationing in Quebec with their three children, called last night asking me to go and check on her husband because he had not been answering the calls. I went to check on my friend. He was there sitting on his favorite chair but lifeless.
Marc was only forty five.
