Quote: ‘AU yet to clear Bashir’ - Museveni Publication date: Friday, 19th June, 2009 by Vision reporter PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has appealed to the international community to take tough measures against perpetrators of violence in Darfur. Museveni called for a swift move to stop what he called ‘Arab chauvinism against African sovereignty’. The President, on a three-day working visit to Germany, was meeting the country’s parliamentary committee on East Africa at Adlon Hotel in Berlin. The committee members include Fischer Hartwig, Grosberg Gabriel, Meinhardt Patrick, Dr. Uschi and Muller Kerstin. “Darfur is a real problem to Africa; the international community must find a quick solution. Africans are being displaced from their land,” Museveni said. He however defended the position of the African Union (AU), on the warrant of arrest issued against Sudanese President, Gen. Omar el Bashir. Museveni said it was agreed at the AU that Bashir should neither be condemned nor condoned before leaders get the report from the Mbeki investigating team. He explained that Africans are fair people who do not rush to judge others before hearing from both sides. Museveni explained that the African leaders did not brush aside accusations against Bashir. They instead instituted a team under former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, to investigate the matter. The President told the committee members that he raised the issue of the situation in Darfur to his Sudanese counterpart, Bashir, at a recent COMESA summit in Zimbabwe. He assured the committee that a solution can be found for Darfur, adding that Arabs should stop their hegemony over the Africans. The President was optimistic that the situation in Southern Sudan would improve. He however observed that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement must be fully implemented by the Sudanese government. On peace talks between the Government and Joseph Kony, Museveni said there would be no more talks. “Kony was playing games and our friends who are gullible took him seriously.” He however clarified that Kony and his group was free to sign the peace agreement. The President disclosed that Kony has been sending messages that he wants to sign the peace agreement and that he wanted the Government to declare a ceasefire. “We can create a peace corridor for him if he wants.” Museveni told the committee that his government had identified priority areas to spur the country’s economic development.
