Serious Violation of Human Rights in Darfur: July Report
July 31, 2003 Sudanese government has heavily intensified its attacks on civilian targets in Darfur. The government army and its militias killed over 150 people, injured dozens, made more than 35,000 others homeless and completed destroyed 78 villages between June 30 and July 30,2003. Government troops and militias killed 29 people and completely destroyed 20 villages in Jababir and Abara areas between 29 June and 1 July 2003. Both areas are located at about 50 kilometers to the north of Kutum. The followings are the names of some and not of the people killed: 1) Sheik Hamid Mohamed Adam 2) Sheik Mussa Abdalla 3) Ismail Mohamed 4) Adam Yagoub Adam 5) Attahir Abdalla 6) Mohamedein Ibrahim 7) Abbaker Mohamed Adam Khadija Mohamed Suleiman 9) Abdalrahman Ahmed 10) Adam Abdalla Mohamed 11) Osman Mohamed 12) Ibrahim Abbas 13) Mohamed Adam Haroun 14) Adam Ahmed Mohamed 15) Mohamed Ahmed 16) Ibrahim Adam Abdalrahman 17) Adam Abdalrasul 1 Mohamed Ahmed Idris 19) Abdalaziz Abbaker 20) Omar Abdalla Adam 21) Adam Idris Abdalla 22) Alhaj Abdelrahman Abdalla 23) Alhaj Adam Mohamed 24) Adam Ahmed Ali 25) Abdalla Adam Dawalbeit 26) Abbaker Abdalla 27) Abakker Abdalla 2 Adam Ahmed Haroun 29) Babiker Yagoub
Moreover, three more people were missing and many others were inured. The area is a Tunjur area and most of the dead are therefore Tunjur. Tunjur are the founders of the kingdom that preceded the Fur Sultanate.
Between 15 July and 20 July, 2003 government troops and militias also completely destroyed the following villages and displaced their population: 1) Dissa 2) Khor Sayal 3) Amara 4) Khashm Kuma 5) Gariat Haroun 6) Umsayala 7) Seinur Kreiker 9) Gariat Yagoub Tor 10) Mukta 11) Seilei 12) Fur-lago 13) Sundu 14) Tangarara 15) Katambuk 16) Jafeina 17) Gariat Sheik Ali 1 Tuweira 19) Sobora 20) Kurgei 21) Karingo 22) Bindko 23) Gariat Fakki Ismail 24) Ghireir 25) Khammar and 26) Daya.
These villages are located between 15 and 50 kilometers to the north of Kutum and their population includes Fur, Tunjur, Zagawa and a few Berti. Human casualties are still unknown since units of government army and camel-herding Arab militias that are supported by the government have isolated the area. We believe that the population of the area is completely destitute since people have lost their homes and left without food or secured sources of water let alone asking about medication or schooling for their kids. Government forces and its militias also attacked Shoba five times on July 24, 25 and 26 consecutively, killed 64 people and destroyed the town completely. Shoba is located at the distance of 7 kilometers to the south of the city of Kabkabbya. The followings are the names of some, but not all, of the people who have been massacred: 1) Adam Mohamed Mussa (80 years old) 2) Ishaq Abbaker Haroun (78 years) 3) Abdalla Abbaker Omar (75 years) 4) Mohamed Eid (70 years) 5) Mohamed Adam Tarra (70 years) 6) Ismail Adam Tarra (63 years) 7) Ali Adam Suliman (70 years) Sideeg Adam Suliman (68 years) 9) Mussa Dawoud (60 years) 10) Yahya Mohamed Slami (45 years) 11) Mohamed Idris Adam (28 years) 12) Mohamed Ishaq Atteem (23 years) 13) Nuraddeen Sideeg Adam (13 years) 14) Khatir Saleh Mohamed (32 years) 15) Ahmed Adam Hussein (25 years) 16) Ahmed Asheik (years 65) 17) Adam Adam (45 years) 1 Suliman Bilal (55 years) 19) Ali Baker (50 years) 20) Adam Ibrahim (45 years) 21) Halima Bukra (80 years) 22) Mohamed Ahmed Bukhari (55 years)
Moreover, Khatir Saleh Mohamed (32 years), Halima Abdalla Ahmed (78 years) and Adam Mohamed Shogar (43 years) were injured during the attacks on Shoba. Suleiman Tahir Abdalla, the 50 years old traditional chief of Shoba, and two of his relatives (the 32 years old Abulgasim Tahir and 37 years old Mohamed Ahmed Tahir) were arrested and detained incommunicado. Eyewitnesses emphasized that more than 40 people were still missing or their bodies unidentified.
Sudanese authorities implemented in Shoba the same policy, which they had implemented to isolate the 26 villages, which they destroyed to the north of Kutum. As a result of a policy Shoba is completely isolated from the rest of the region including Kabkabya, which is at the distance of only 7 kilometers.
Shoba is a Fur town and it has been attacked more than seven times since April 2002. Shoba was attacked twice in April 2002 and 30 people were killed among its population and many others were detained incommunicado.
Dimbiting, Wira, Oromafattala, Jugumu, Leiba, Shartaying-elei and Omadaling-elei in the district of Kidinyeer (between 65 and 70 kilometers north of Nyala in southern Darfur) were attacked several times between July 23 and 28. Ali Tibin (53 years), Suliman Ali Hamza (51 years), Abdalla Mohamed Ahmed (45 years) and Nazifa Suleiman (36 years) were killed. Government forces (troops and militias) set houses and shops on the fire after #####ng them and rustled all the livestock. These villages had been attacked in June and October last year (2002) and earlier this year and most of their population is displaced in lamentable conditions because of government policy of isolating the destitute population from the rest of region after having attacked their areas. Between July 28 and July 31, 2003 Sudanese government forces and militias simultaneously attacked villages of Adar, Gouz Wadmaein, Gundilyab, Kringa, Sheribarbou to the north of Kutum in Northern Darfur and killed more than 70 people and injured many others. The villages have been completely destroyed and their population displaced in the semi desert area without food, secured sources of water or shelter. The followings are the names of some of the people killed: 1- Yahya Alton Alnur 2-Adam Adlum Suliman 3- Abdelrhamn Daffa Suliman 4- Salh Assai Aldoum 5- Mohamed Idriss Dahia 6- Dawoud Issa Altoum 7- Abakar Mussa Yaghoub 8- Babker Haroun Ahmed 9- Alsadiq Mohamed Adam 10 Mohamed Ibrahim Yousif 11- Ahmed Abdelkarim Murssal 12 -Suliman Ibrahim 13 -Abakar Ali Reziq 14 -Bshier Dahia Nok 15-Sherti Shrief Jumma 16-Hamed Daowud Baki 17-Suliman Suliman Mussa 18-Sediq Abohamed 19- Sediq Abdallah Bush 20-Haj Alnur Niel Dalam 21- Idriss Adam Ali 22-Omar Maki Saeid 23-Abdelkarim Jaltah 24-Mohamed Jaltah Shakren 25-Hassan Alnur 26-Adam Ahmed Abdalla 27-Mussa Alur Alkhalla Abdelall 28-Adam Gri Arkul 29-Bdar Hassan Jaber 30-Abakar Skb Saghrio 31-Abakar Brssah Jangha 32- Ibrahim Adam Altyb 33-Roudah Hassan Hamed 34- Zakria Yahya Zakria 35- Daoud Alnur Arabi 36-Yaghoub Arja Sherief 37-Mukhtar Adam Ali 38-Makkah Nassr Mahmoud 39-Mohamed Mansur Nhar 40-Abdelkariem Hari Abdelrhman 41-Ibrahim Abdelkarim Taour 42-Hamed Arjah 43- Abdelaziz Youns Yahia 44- Idain Adam Yahia 45-Yaya Adam Saeid 46-Hiah Mansur Khrief 47-Ali Alamien Blal 48-Daoud Ibrahim Mahmoud 49-Yagub Khalifa Yasien 50-Ibrahim Arbab Adam 51-Mansur Nahar Abdeljabar 52-Mohamed Youns Arja 53-Abdalla Ahmed Bshier 54-Sharief Jumah 55-Hamied Daoud Baki 56- Kjar Abdelkariem 57-Ibrahim Jaber Kou 58-Ismaeil Nazer Abdalla 59- Alsadiq Issmaeil Deigo 60-Ahmed Abdalla Gaid 61-Yousif Hassan Garja 62-Mohamed Yousif Ibrahim 63- Hgar Mukhtar 64-Altoum Alnur Abdelkariem 65-Muhamed Nur Mustafa 66-Hamied Ibrahim Arbab 67-Mahmoud Omar Khalifa 68-Abdelkriem Abdalla Gadi 69-Suliman Ahmed Jamma
Most of the people who have been killed in these villages are Zagawa. Our sources emphasize that more than 80% of the villages of Northern Darfur have been virtually destroyed and their population displaced.
We have found it regrettable that Sudanese regime is categorized as a cooperating regime in the United Nations’ register of human rights. It is a shame that those who experience all types of suffering are forgotten because of the political interests in the club of nations.
Sudan Human Rights Organization in Canada appeals to both international human rights and aid organizations to intervene and rescue the innocent civilians before it is too late.
