Abyei's stolen property openly auctioned in northern Sudan May 28, 2008 (Abyei NSV) - Goods stolen from Abyei are being openly displayed for sale in northern Sudan, sources told NSV.
"I sold two computers in Mugled, one for 150 SDG- or $75. Now I want to sell my freezer!" One soldier attached to SAF's battalion in Mugled proudly said to a friend on 24th May after arriving from Abyei. The town of Abyei that witnessed violence since 13th May suffered #####ng from 15th till today. The worse vandalism occurred when Misseriya forces went to beep up SAF's position against the SPLA that withdrew from the town as early as 15th May and were on the offensive to regain their positions.
Loads of lorries are sighted en route to Mugled and Babanusa with things looted from Abyei. "On Friday 23rd May, things looted by the army-SAF and Misseriya militias were sold in the open market in Mugled," said an informant, Ahmed Ibrahim to NSV.
Reliable sources confirmed the presence of South Sudan Police car in Babanusa; "the pick up Land Cruiser is at Babanusa Police HQs in the town." Though most of the cars were burned in Abyei, other people talked of "seeing" at least four cars taken from Abyei. They are in Mugled.
During the assault on Abyei by a combined SAF and armed Misseriya militia forces, property destroyed and looted from Abyei were genuine belongings of Ngok's returnees from exile in northern Sudan. The lost of their property could lead to similar claims to what Darfur is demanding, "compensation" by NCP lead government in Khartoum.
As SAF is in control of Abyei town, Misseriya forces are still being ferried into Abyei by night. Most of the militias going to Abyei are reserved force of formerly Popular Defense Force that fought along SAF during the 21-year war between north and south. Members of this PDF are present in Mugled, Babanusa, Kijera, Meiram, Fulla, Tubun and other small villages.
