Quote: 29.09.2016 The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, during a period that witnessed a revival of religious fundamentalism and armed combat against Western, and in particular British occupation of the Arabian peninsula. According to al-Banna, contemporary Islam had become corrupted by Western influences. The ideas brought them to power, in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood was born and in most of the countries of the "Arab Spring" where aging nationalist dictators were deposed through popular uprisings. Initially keeping a distance from popular demands for democracy, the Brotherhood benefitted from their first democratic election when Mohammed Morsi came to power in Egypt in 2012 with 51% of the vote. To understand the movement today we look back on its history and ideas through interviews with founding leaders and analysts.
