Sudanese Media Centre Intends to Start Legal Proceedings against ICC Prosecutor Posted on Sunday, July 20 @ 00:00:00 BST by admin
By: Mona Al-Bashir Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) announced its intention to start legal proceeding against ICC Prosecutor-General Luis Moreno Ocampo through the legal advisors of the centre, after his accusation of SMC as misleading the local and foreign public opinion over Darfur issue.
Ocampo accused the SMC as publishing false news that "Darfur is a stable place where life is normal." SMC issued a statement that the stability of Darfur is a reality proved by the SMC coverage to the developments in Darfur, besides the report of UN, AU missions, and the diplomatic corps that visited the area. General Manager of the SMC, Engineer Abdul Rahman Ibrahim affirmed, in a press conference yesterday, their rejection to curtail the national media in Sudan and attempt to draw the attention of the whole world from a national media centre conveying the reality (referring to SMC). Ibrahim considered Ocampo's accusations as targeting the success of SMC and its organizing the Sudanese/European Relations Forum which showed the participants the facts on the ground and its outcome has been published in most of the western media. He added that that accusations mean that Sudan's media has affected the foreign media. The SMC General Manager demanded that Ocampo must leave the Sudanese media alone to conduct its work in relating the facts. He affirmed that their response to Ocampo's allegations will be an improvement in their profession and linking the SMC with all Sudan's parts; announcing at the same time that they are now preparing to launch a new highly equipped site for the SMC including a broadcasting station, TV channel, and research and studies centre. For his part, Sudanese Journalists' Union Secretary-General, Al-Fateh Al-Sayed described the accusation as used to stance affirming that they will not waive from press freedom and peace culture spread besides the peaceful resolution to Sudan's problems. Al-Sayed called on Sudanese press to concentrate on the IDPs voluntary return. Sudanese Bar Association Secretary-General Fathi Khalil lauded the stance of Sudanese press and media affirming that allegations against (SMCc) calls into question the credibility of Ocampo who did not present any evidence and that makes him subject to face legal proceedings. He concluded that what they say against the SMC is considered an honour to all Sudanese media.
