قدمت الصحفية شاهناز حبيب بجريدة استار الماليزية اليومية تقريرا عن الخرطوم مصنفة اياها بانها من اغلى من العالم وفق التقرير الذي تم نشره في عددالثلاثاء 12/6/2007
واليكم ملخص التقرير الصحفي
لم اتوقع ان تكون هذه هي الخرطوم عاصمة السودان من اغلى مدن العالم ان اسعار الايجارات والاكل مريعة كيلو الدجاج ما يعادل 20 رنقت ماليزي وفي بعض الاوقات يصل السعر الى 36 رنقت
في المدينة التي يتلاقى فيها النيل الابيض بالازرق كيلو الاسماك الطازجة بما يعادل 6.9 رنتق ماليزي
كيلو البطاطس 8.4 رنتق كيلو البص 4 رنتق
طلب وجبة دجاج مع البطاطا المقلية والمياه الغازية في مطاعم الوجبات السريعة ما يعادل 76 رنقت
اما عن وجبات الفنادق ما بين 120 رنتق الى 130 رنقت.
اما تكلفة الايجار السكني 300 دولار ما يعادل 1405 رنتق للشهر الواحد. اما الشقق المفروشة 2000-4000 دولار ما يعدل 6937-13874 للشهر الواحد
لا اجد مبررا ان تكون الخرطوم من اغلى مدن العالم وليس افريقيا فحسب.
ثم عرجت الصحفية قائلةان شركة بتروناس الماليزية اشترت قطعة ارض على النيل بسعر 17 مليون دولار مايعادل 58.9 مليون رنقت
ان مستوى تكلفة المعيشة والايجارات عالية جدا.
وبررت كل ذلك للتكلفة العالية للحياة اليومية لعدم وجود مصانع محلية بالاضافة الى الضرائب العالية على الواردات.

Not cheap to live in Khartoum

Sudan's capital is a very expensive city to live in and can really burn a big hole in your pocket.
ONE would not expect this but Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
The price of food and house rental is shocking to say the least. Expect to fork out a minimum of RM20 for a kilo of chicken. At times, it is even up to RM36 per kilo.
In the city, where the Blue Nile and White Nile meets, fresh fish costs RM6.90 if one waits by the river in the morning for fishermen coming in with their catch. But if you shop for it in the supermarket, expect to pay RM45 per kilo.
Potatoes are RM8.40 per kilo while onions cost RM4 per kilo.
A simple order of a piece of chicken, fries and a soft drink at the local fast food joint sets you back by a whopping RM76. If you fancy a buffet meal at a hotel, it is a horrific RM120 to RM130.
Mariam, a Filipina married to a Sudanese, and who has lived in the city for 16 years, no longer buys her sugar, rice and other supplies retail anymore.
“I go to the wholesaler and buy supplies by the sack. It's cheaper that way,” she said.
Renting a house costs about US$3,000 (RM10,405) a month while a furnished apartment is US$2,000 (RM6,937) to US$4,000 (RN13,874) a month.
“I don't know why but Khartoum is one of the most expensive cities in the world – not only in Africa but the world,” said Malaysia's Ambassador to Sudan Zainal Hamzah.
He noted that it costs Petronas, a major investor in Sudan, US$17mil (RM58.9mil) to buy a 0.8ha piece of land in the city by the River Nile.
“The cost of living is high and the rental is very expensive. A plate of nasi briyani at a restaurant is about RM60.” He attributed this high price of food to high taxes on imports.
Sudan, he said, imported a great deal of its food and other needs, including equipment and machinery, because the country does not have a big industry locally to source from.
Mariam said she had noticed that prices started to climb more than 10 years ago when Sudan first started exploring its rich oil resources and oil money led to a boom in the economy.
Khartoum University final year student of economics and social studies Zainab Sulaiman Yahya estimated that despite the boom, some 90% of the people in the city were poor.
She said Sudan had two classes – the very rich and the very poor; with no middle class.
Mona Abdellah Al Azim, also from the university, said people had to take on other jobs while some relied on rich relatives.
But despite this situation and difficulties, there are no thieves on the streets. It is admirable how people can walk out of the banks in the city unescorted with cash in thin plastic bags without needing to look over their shoulder.
