Debates in the Sudanese Parliament and Council of States have taken on an unusual tone, with members of the ruling National Congress Party and its allies threatening to withdraw their support for the current government.
The source of the MPs’ anger is the deteriorating economic situation in the country. They have openly criticised the government policies “that have transformed the national currency into a piece of ice in hot water.”
Several MPs crossed the floor to demand that the Ministers of Finance and Social Security be relieved of their duties as their portfolios are “failures”.
This is an unusual occurrence in Sudan, where the ruling National Congress Party demands absolute loyalty from members, and tolerates little dissent.
