RELEASE CLOSING THE MEETING TO BRING ABOUT

At the initiative of the Republic of Chad, with the strong support of the International Community, and with the active assistance of Libya and Eritrea, a meeting to reconcile members of the SLM leadership was held from 24-26 November 2005 at N’djamena under the chairmanship of General Mahamat Ali Abdallah Nassour, Chadian Minister of Territorial Administration and Chairman of the Joint Commission, assisted by Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union in Sudan and with the participation of partners from the International Community. This meeting built on the achievements of previous initiatives, especially those by the USA at Nairobi and El-Fasher.

JEM Representatives also attended the meeting as observers. Their positive contribution was much appreciated.

After the opening statement by General MAHAMAT ALI ABDALLAH NASSOUR, Minister of Territorial Administration, proximity talks were jointly conducted by the Mediation Team and Facilitators, namely Libya and Eritrea.

The meeting welcomed the presence in N’djamena of all the SLM leadership as well as the spirit of understanding and co-operation they showed throughout the long consultations. They were urged to maintain the momentum of the spirit thus created.

The Leadership of the SLM committed themselves to go to the Abuja talks with one common negotiation platform.

In this respect, they agreed to set up a joint Committee to draft this common platform and vision as regards the 7th round of the inter-Sudanese peace talks.

They also agreed to set up a joint Committee to consider ways and means to achieve total reconciliation of the SLM leadership.

The SLM leadership reiterated commitment to abide by the N’djamena Humanitarian Ceasefire Agreement, the additional Protocols, as well as all other agreements they have entered into. They further undertook to fully co-operate with the Chadian Mediation, the AU, the International Community and the Humanitarian Organizations operating on the ground in Darfur.

At the end of the meeting, the SLM Leadership expressed their deep and warm gratitude to H.E. Idriss Deby, and to the Government and people of Chad for their mediation initiative as well as for their warm brotherly welcome during their stay in N’djamena.
