Darfur: Attack on Um Dom Village, Ishma

On 26 May 2005, armed militias on camels reportedly the Janjaweed militias wearing military uniform attacked Um Dom village in Ishma area, Nyala province, Southern Darfur state wounding at least two men. The militias looted approximately 185 livestock. The details of the wounded men are as follows:

Salih Khmeas Adam, (50 yrs), Dajo tribe, Farmer
Adam Soulieman Zakarea, (31 yrs), Dajo, Farmer

The two men were referred to Nyala Hospital by SOAT’s partner organization in Nyala, the Amel Centre for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims where they remain and are receiving medication from the centre.

SOAT condemns the attack on Um Dom village and the continual violations of the ceasefire agreement and is calling on the government of Sudan to undertake an investigation into the attack and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The continued attack on civilians in Darfur are a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement, UNSC resolutions and international and humanitarian law protecting civilians and undermines the government of Sudan (GoS) declared commitment to finding a resolution to the conflict in Darfur. SOAT reiterates its call to the government of Sudan to respect its obligations under the Abuja Protocols.

SOAT calls on the government of Sudan to:

Immediately investigate the attack on Um Dom village and bring the perpetrators to justice;
Ensure the protection of all civilians, including displaced persons and children;
Immediately cease attacks on civilians and adhere to it commitments under the ceasefire agreement and all UN Security Council resolutions;
Guarantee the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of association throughout Sudan in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
