Karti meets AU-UN Chief Mediator for Darfur
Khartoum, July 20 (SUNA)- State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali Karti, reviewed with the visiting AU-UN Chief Mediator for Darfur, Djibril Yipènè Bassolé, the issue of Darfur as well as proposals for work on the various tracks in the coming period. In this regard, the State Minister said in a statement to the press that Bassolé's visit, which is the first of the AU-UN Chief Mediator for Darfur to Sudan, aims at introducing himself to the Sudanese officials and that he will come again in next August. The AU-UN Chief Mediator on Darfur, on his part, said enhancement of consultations and dialogue are among his top priorities, which he will set in collaboration with the Sudanese officials. As for his assignment by the UN and African Union, he said it aims at boosting the security and peace in the Sudan, saying that he has a good impression because there is will and initiatives to promote dialogue. He explained that he will work in this direction in the coming days while taking into account the Sudanese points of view regarding the settlement of the issue. Meanwhile, the official Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali Al-Saddiq, described as exploratory the visit of the AU-UN Chief Mediator on Darfur, saying that he will pay an official visit to Sudan in August. Ambassador Al-Saddiq explained that the meetings of the AU-UN Chief Mediator with the Sudanese officials come to listen to their points of view regarding the security and humanitarian situations in Darfur besides the peacekeeping operation and the political process in Darfur in a view that his main task is to focus on political dialogue and how to resume it. Ambassador Al-Saddiq further said the AU-UN Chief Mediator touched in his talks on the efforts to push forward the political solution. He added that Mr. Bassolé made contacts in this connection with UN officials who are in charge of the hybrid operation as well as unofficial contacts with some of the armed movements in Darfur, saying that Bassole pointed out that he would work to resume the political dialogue as soon as possible and that he would also work to unify the various factions under one unified negotiations umbrella because whoever isolates himself from the political dialogue will be held responsible by the international community.
