CAIRO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Wednesday renewed his call for holding a high-level meeting to address Sudan's Darfur crisis, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.
During talks with new United Nations (UN) -African Union (AU) envoy to Darfur Djibril Bassole, Abul Gheit said the meeting should be held as soon as possible under the sponsorship of the UN and the AU, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki was quoted as saying.
An agreement on a new roadmap for resolving the crisis in the western Sudanese region should be reached in the meeting, he said.
Bassole was invited to visit Cairo for talks on Egypt's viewpoint and the Egyptian initiatives to push forward the Darfur peace process and help promote negotiations between the Sudanese government and rebels, Zaki said.
The meeting between Abul Gheit and Bassole reflects the UN and AU's desire to boost cooperation with Egypt on restoring peace and stability in Sudan, the spokesman added.
More than ten thousand people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the five-year-long conflict in Darfur.
