Activists, The Sudanese human rights, political parties/orgs, and independent human rights figures held a conference call on 11/22/04 at 8pm (US Eastern Time) to address the development in the case of Mr. Abdelaziz Khalid, a leading figure within the Sudanese National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Ms. Ghada Khalid, daughter of the NDA fighter, alerted the human rights community that her father is in the process to be extradited from UAE to Sudan.
The 12 participants in the conference call discussed and reviewed previous efforts on this issue and what needs to be additionally done. The following items were discussed as part of the short and long-term plan of action:
1. To reach out to the large human rights and political community to be part of these orhesterated campaign (Mahgoub Tigani, Haggam, Hatim, Seif).
2. To contact with the legal defense team of Mr. Abdelaziz Khalid (use Kamal Elgizouli's email).
3. To contact the NDA inside Sudan (Mr. Ghazi Suliman), and the NDA in Cairo (e.g. Tigani Eltayeb, Mohamed Osman Elmerghani) and in Kenya (John Garang). Ghada and Mohamed elgadi
4. To flood the Arabic media (Sudanese and non-Sudanese)and the English one especially the online media to highlight the gross violation of human rights in handing over Mr. Khalid to the Khartoum regime (The DA Chapters of CA and DC to prepare Arabic Press release; and Philadelphia's the English version).
5. To get prepared to the next step in case Mr. Khalid was put on trial in Sudan by conatcting and preparing an international human rights lawyers team (GATS to start making the first contacts in this regard).
6. The Sudan Alliance Forces, and other political orgs/parties to coordinate work inside Sudan to moblize mass civil protests in the airport when Mr. Khalid arrived tomorrow (expected in the afternoon on the Qatareyah Airlines). 7. To work closely with other human rights groups in the US to put more pressure on the Sudan Embassy using the successful methods used before to release 4 community leaders from Darfur. Coordination with strong human rights allies is important especially with orgs like Amnesty International (Ms. Claudia Rhodes-Group 12; Human Rights Watch (Ms. Jemera Rhon), TransAfrica Forum (Mr. Bill Fletcher), and Africa Action (Mr. Salih Booker). Contact information will follow in a separate message.
The meetins sent a strong message of concern to the Government of Sudan reminding it of the general amnesty issued by a Presidential Decree, which is understood to include Mr. Khalid among all other opposition forces. Arresting, and humilating Mr. Khalid is seen as abuse of the peace process environment. This is somthing government of Sudan should be refrained from doing.
