U.S.: Sudan group funding bin Laden

WASHINGTON, 14 October (AP) - The Bush administration yesterday accused a Sudan-based relief organization and five of its officials of helping finance Osama bin Laden and other terrorists.

The Treasury Department's action means U.S. banks must block any assets found in this country belonging to the Islamic African Relief Agency and the five designated officials. People in the United States are not allowed to provide money to them.

The department said the group, based in Khartoum, Sudan, had more than 40 offices worldwide, including one in Columbia, Mo. The five officials designated by the Treasury are all listed as being outside this country.

A message seeking comment was left with the group's office in Missouri.

Treasury officials alleged that international offices of the Islamic African Relief Agency "provided direct financial support" for bin Laden. They also alleged that the group "engaged in a joint program with an institute controlled by [bin Laden] that was involved in providing assistance to Taliban fighters."

The government alleged that the overseas branches of the group provided "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to bin Laden in 1999.

إنتقد د. مجذوب الخليفة أحمد وزير الزراعة الأمين السياسي للحزب الحاكم إتهام واشنطن للوكالة الاسلامية الأفريقية للإغاثة والتي تتخذ من الخرطوم مقراً لمكتبها الرئيسي بدعم القاعدة والإرهاب.

وقال لــ «الرأي العام» ان الولايات المتحدة تشن الحرب على كل المنظمات الإسلامية بغرض إيقاف الدعم الإسلامي للفقراء والمحتاجين في افريقيا والدول الاسلامية لتمكين منظمات مشبوهة.

وقال ان هذا الموقف يمثل وقفة تجاه الهجمة ضد الاسلام داعياً الأقطار التي بها مكاتب للوكالة الإشراف على نشاطها وقال ان السودان قطر مستقل في قضائه وإشرافه وتعامله مع المنظمات عن أمريكا واضاف نحن ضد الإرهاب ولكنه أصبح ذريعة لمحاربة الإسـلام.

وقال إن الوكالة لاتمانع الحكومة في نشاطها طالما هي ملتزمة بالقوانين السودانية مشيراً إلى أنهم لا ينفذون ما تعلنه أمريكا ..
