هدد مغترب سوداني عاد لبلاده أخيرا بالخروج عن الإسلام بعد أن فرض عليه جهاز شؤون السودانيين العاملين بالخارج زكاة لم يكن بمقدوره دفعها فيما يبدو. وأقسم هذا السوداني أمام موظفي ديوان الزكاة الذي يتولى جمع أموال الزكاة من السودانيين في داخل البلاد وخارجها، بأنه سيخرج من الإسلام إن دفع الزكاة.
وبحسب موقع "الخرطوم اليوم" الإلكتروني، فإن الموظف المسؤول عن الزكاة في جهاز المغتربين في الخرطوم، الذي عادة ما يضطلع بإجراءات السودانيين العاملين بالخارج، اضطر لأن يؤجل للرجل الزكاة المقررة عليه، مشيرا في تصريحات للموقع المذكور "تعاملت مع القاعدة الفقهية ارتكاب أخف الضررين أن يدفع الزكاة ويخرج من الإسلام أم تؤجل له الزكاة حفاظاً على دينه فاخترت التأجيل على الدفع".
وتزايدت احتجاجات المغتربين السودانيين في الآونة الأخيرة من الضرائب والزكاة والرسوم الأخرى المقررة عليهم سنويا، بالإضافة لعدم تمتعهم بخدمات تعليمية وصحية في بلادهم بالقدر الذي توفره السلطات للسودانيين في الداخل.
وكتب آلاف السودانيين في الخارج خصوصا في منطقة الخليج العربي، رسالة موجهة للرئيس السوداني عمر البشير طالبوا من خلالها بإعادة النظر في ضرائب المغتربين، وفي الخدمات التعليمية لأبنائهم حيث يدرس هؤلاء الجامعات في السودان برسوم سنوية كبيرة.

It is time for a serious revision on the NIF wrongful application of Islamic Shari'a that since Nimeir's 1983 September Laws worsened the living standards of the Sudanese, instead of easing them as Islam originally profess. Even the 1st Caliph Abu Bakr, a highly-veneered disciple of the Prophet who compelled early protesting Muslims to pay the Zakah, has been recently criticized by Islamist thinkers (see, for example, Saeed al-'Ashmawi of Egypt). 'Ashmawi, a distinguished judicial expert, asserted that Abu Bakr's war to get Muslims to pay Zakah "was not necessary."

Zakah [alms giving], by the very literal meaning of the word, is based on the individual willingness of a Muslim (exactly as all other major or minor obligations of Islam) to "give" Zakah to needy people to please Allah in the first place. A Muslim who is unable to pay Zakah is understandably exempted from this personal obligation, as well eligible to receive assistance from society/government.

The NIF policy makers have largely abused the concept, collection, and distribution of Zakah. Emigrants, low-income employees, farmers, and workers have taken the brunt of the State Zakah tax by force. A large amount of the billions collected, however, has been generously spent by state managers to support the NIF military effort that have criminally destroyed the life and property of millions of the poor citizens all over the country, especially in the South, Darfur and Eastern Sudan - citizens for whom development and humanitarian support from Zakah or other sources should have been consistently spent to improve their life. On the contrary, a substantial amount of the Zakah tax was shamelessly spent on the NIF commissioners, associations, political loyalists and other beneficiaries.

These morally corrupted non-Islamic abuses of the Zakah, as well as other State monies, have been bitterly criticized since Nimeiri's time. The 1st conference on the application of Shari'a Law in Sudan (September 1984) recommended a strong revision of the Zakah monies. A conference on Zakah held by the democratically-elected government in 1986 adopted that recommendation. Under Sadiq al-Mahdi's government, Diwan al-Zakah directed the Zakah monies to serve larger segments of the poor and the needy. Still, al-Mahdi's government did not correct the concept of alms giving to mean, as it should religiously mean, optional alms giving rather than a police-minded enforceable hunt of bankrupt emigrants to finance the NIF fattening corrupted personnel!.

The worst wrong-doer of Islam in Sudan is the State of Sudan, specifically the NIF so-called "Islamic" party, government, and presidency.
