Search for Coronavirus Vaccine Becomes a Global Competition
The United States, China and Europe are battling to be the first to find a cure, bringing a nationalist element to a worldwide crisis.

March 19, 2020

WASHINGTON — A global arms race for a coronavirus vaccine is underway.

In the three months since the virus began its deadly spread, China, Europe and the United States have all set off at a sprint to become the first to produce a vaccine. But while there is cooperation on many levels — including among companies that are ordinarily fierce competitors — hanging over the effort is the shadow of a nationalistic approach that could give the winner the chance to favor its own population and potentially gain the upper hand in dealing with the economic and geostrategic fallout from the crisis.

What began as a question of who would get the scientific accolades, the patents and ultimately the revenues from a successful vaccine is suddenly a broader issue of urgent national security. And behind the scramble is a harsh reality: Any new vaccine that proves potent against the coronavirus — clinical trials are underway in the United States, China and Europe already — is sure to be in short supply as governments try to ensure that their own people are the first in line.

In China, 1,000 scientists are at work on a vaccine, and the issue has already been militarized: Researchers affiliated with the Academy of Military Medical Sciences have developed what is considered the nation’s front-runner candidate for success and is recruiting volunteers for clinical trials.

China “will not be slower than other countries,” Wang Junzhi, a biological products quality control expert with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said Tuesday at a news conference in Beijing.

Treatments for COVID-19: Drugs being tested against the coronavirus

Several drugs are in various stages of being tested as treatments for the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
By Live Science Staff 6 days ago
The world is now desperate to find ways to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus and to find effective treatments. As of Friday (March 20), 86 clinical trials of COVID-19 treatments or vaccines that are either ongoing or recruiting patients. New ones are being added every day, as the case count in the U.S. (and globally) skyrockets. The drugs being tested range from repurposed flu treatments to failed ebola drugs, to malaria treatments that were first developed decades ago. Here, we take a look at several of the treatments that doctors hope will help fight COVID-19.
Japan flu drug
A drug developed by Fujifilm Toyama Chemical in Japan is showing promising outcomes in treating at least mild to moderate cases of COVID-19, Live Science previously reported.
The antiviral drug, called Favipiravir or Avigan, has been used in Japan to treat influenza, and last month, the drug was approved as an experimental treatment for COVID-19 infections, Pharmaceutical Technology reported.
ADVERTISING
So far, reports suggest the drug has been tested in 340 individuals in Wuhan and Shenzhen. "It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment," Zhang Xinmin, of China's science and technology ministry, said March 17, The Guardian reported.
The drug, which works by preventing certain viruses from replicating, seemed to shorten the duration of the virus as well as improve lung conditions (as seen in X-rays) in tested patients, though the research has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed science journal.

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine

By Live Science Staff 6 days ago:-

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, but preliminary research in human and primate cells suggests that the drugs could effectively treat COVID-19.
A 2005 study found that chloroquine could quell the spread of SARS-CoV when applied to infected human cells in culture. SARS-CoV is closely related to the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and caused an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2002. Chloroquine disrupts the ability of the SARS-CoV virus to enter and replicate in human cells, Live Science previously reported. The cell culture studies of SARS-CoV-2 revealed that the drug and its derivative hydroxychloroquine undermine the novel virus' replication in a similar way.
Doctors in China, South Korea, France and the U.S. are now giving the drug to some patients with COVID-19 with promising, albeit anecdotal, results so far. The FDA is organizing a formal clinical trial of the drug.

As of Feb. 23, seven clinical trials had been registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry to test whether COVID-19 infections could be treated with hydroxychloroquine. In addition, the University of Minnesota is studying whether taking hydroxychloroquine can protect people living with infected COVID-19 patients from catching the virus themselves.
In one heavily referenced study, conducted in France, a small number of patients with COVID-19 received either hydroxychloroquine alone or hydroxychloroquine in combination with an antibiotic called azithromycin. The authors reported that detectable concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 fell significantly faster in the study participants than coronavirus patients at other French hospitals who did not receive either drug. In six patients also given azithromycin, this promising effect appeared to be amplified.
However, the CDC noted that the small, non-randomized study "did not assess clinical benefit[s]" associated with the treatment; in other words, the study did not probe whether the treated patients were more likely to recover and survive their illness. Additionally, the agency advised that doctors should be cautious when giving either drug to patients with chronic disease, such as kidney failure, and especially those "who are receiving medications that might interact to cause arrhythmias."

French pharmaceutical Sanofi offers anti-malaria treatment for COVID-19 after ‘promising’ trials

Sanofi said it was ready to offer France millions of doses of Plaquenil
Several experts called for caution in the absence of further studies
DUBAI: A leading French pharmaceutical company said it could potentially treat 300,000 COVID-19 patients with the anti-malarial drug Plaquenil after what it described as “promising” test results.
Sanofi said it was ready to offer France millions of doses of Plaquenil, a spokesperson for the laboratory told AFP, adding that the group was ready to work with French health authorities “to confirm these results.”
The study on 24 patients with coronavirus using Plaquenil, a hydroxychloroquine molecule, which has also been used for decades for the treatment of autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
Six days after the start of taking Plaquenil, the virus had disappeared in three-quarters of those treated, said Professor Didier Raoult, who is director of the Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire de Marseille.
The French government said the clinical trials were “promising” and would be extended to more patients.
These new clinical trials “will be carried out with a team independent from Professor (Didier) Raoult”, said spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye after a Council of Ministers, stressing that at this stage there was “no scientific evidence” that this treatment works.
Several experts called for caution in the absence of further studies due to the dangers of side effects.
“I have taken note of the results and have given the authorization so that a larger trial by other teams can be initiated as soon as possible on a larger number of patients,” said Minister of Health Olivier Veran.

Coronavirus: Wuhan doctors celebrate closure of

Coronavirus: Wuhan doctors celebrate closure of last temporary hospital after dramatic fall in cases in
China

Hospital staff in the Chinese city where the coronavirus originated removed their masks ceremoniously as the country’s last emergency hospital, built to handle the crisis, was closed.
In a video that has been viewed millions of times online, workers remove their masks one by one as the camera passes them, to mark the moment.
China built 14 new hospitals, including two in Wuhan, early last month in just weeks to provide thousands of beds for the sick as the virus spread rapidly.
The country has recorded 80,824 cases of coronavirus and 3,189 deaths since the start of the outbreak at the end of last year.
But strict quarantine measures appear to have drastically reduced the number of new cases, and the country has eased up on the measures in its hardest hit region.
On Saturday health chiefs said there had been 13 new deaths and just 11 new cases, including people who recently arrived from other affected countries. More than 65,000 people have recovered from the disease in China.

Meanwhile the US and China have fallen into a war of words over coronavirus. The State Department on Friday summoned China’s ambassador to the US to complain about comments from a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman suggesting that the US army may have introduced the coronavirus to Wuhan.
The department said China’s storyline about the virus had been “shifting away from the Wuhan Huanan market since mid-January, indicating that China is trying avoid responsibility for the outbreak”.
The market, where numerous live animals that would never normally mix in the wild, were kept in close confinement in cages ready for sale for eating, was pinpointed by Chinese and other experts as the source of the virus.

As Coronavirus Spreads, Thai Doctors Discover a Promising Treatment
Thai doctors have found a promising treatment for the new coronavirus.

،،،،
The doctors, from the Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok, said Sunday that a drug cocktail of HIV and flu medication had worked on several patients, including a woman with severe symptoms from Wuhan, China — the epicenter of the outbreak.
"This is not the cure, but the patient's condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours," Rajavithi lung specialist Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich told reporters, according to Reuters.
The successful treatment combined the HIV medications lopinavir and ritonavir with large doses of the flu drug oseltamivir.
Atipornwanich said he had heard that physicians in China were using HIV medications on coronavirus patients.
"We checked related information and found anti-flu drugs were effective on MERS so we combined both groups of medications," he said, according to the Bangkok Post.
The woman given the successful treatment was 70-years-old according to Reuters and 71-years-old according to the Bangkok Post. She had first been admitted to Hua Hin Hospital and then transferred to Rajavithi Hospital on Jan. 29. Her symptoms were severe, and she had tested positive for the virus for 10 days. But 48 hours after treatment, that changed.
"The treatment, as well as the recovery, is fast," Atipornwanich said, according to the Bangkok Times.
Another patient given the drug cocktail improved, whereas one experienced an allergic reaction, according to Reuters.
Somsak Akkslim, director-general of the Medical Services Department, said that the new treatment would only be used for severe cases at first.

"The outlook is good but we still have to do more study to determine that this can be a standard treatment," Atipornwanich said.
The news from Thailand comes as health experts say the virus is likely to become a pandemic, an epidemic that spreads on two or more continents, The New York Times reported. However, it is unclear how dire a pandemic would be, because scientists are not sure exactly how deadly the disease is. As of Sunday, there were more than 17,000 cases in at least 23 countries and more than 360 deaths. However, epidemiologists estimate there may be 100,000 or more cases.
"It's very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic," Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Dr. Anthony S. Fauci told The New York Times. "But will it be catastrophic؟ I don't know."
It is spreading much faster than SARS or MERS, but slower than the flu or measles. However, while SARS killed 10 percent of those infected and MERS kills about a third, the new coronavirus currently has a fatality rate of two percent, and that is likely to drop as milder cases emerge.
However, the 1918 flu epidemic killed 20 to 50 million people despite having a mortality rate of 2.5 percent. This was due to its fast spread and the state of medical care at the time.
In Thailand, 19 cases have been reported, according to Reuters. Of that number, eight patients have made a full recovery while 11 are still being treated.

Books – Ahmed Jumaa:

Dr. Majed Al-Rayes, a cardiologist and intensive care physician in Canada and director of St. Rita Hospital, said the results of the autopsy of corona virus victims emerging in Italy revealed a new matter that may help save the lives of many of the infected people.

Al-Rayyis added in press statements: “They discovered a new thing that the virus does not cause failure to breathe (acute pneumonia), but it causes an increase in blood viscosity and clotting for one reason or another, and this creates small clots in the lung, which leads to the entry of patients into the care rooms and delivery Their ventilators. “
He explained that when using thrombolytic drugs, things improved greatly. He attributed this to the fact that “it is known that the patient when placed on a ventilator rarely exits from it especially in view of the elderly, but for clots, especially since they are small, it is easy to control them when giving solvent clots.”
“Things are improving, and we are beginning to understand why sudden deaths are occurring,” said the Canadian cardiologist and ICU, expecting countries to control the Corona epidemic in late May.

Dr. Majed Al-Rayes, a cardiologist and intensive care physician in Canada and director of St. Rita Hospital, said the results of the autopsy of corona virus victims emerging in Italy revealed a new matter that may help save the lives of many of the infected people.

In a related context, Al-Rayes explained that the use of the drug “hydroxychloroquine” in the treatment of people with corona has achieved “amazing” results currently, approaching 100%, he said.
He said: “The ventilators are removed from the patients, they started to hide and we continued to see the needs of many, which is a good step in controlling the injuries.”

Al-Rayyes pointed out that the drug is available in most countries of the world and is characterized by its relatively inexpensive price, and although it has some side effects, its use under supervision does not cause any problems in treatment.
Domestically, Dr. Khaled Mujahid, Advisor to the Minister of Health for Information Affairs, said that the ministry is using the drug “Hydroxychloroquine”, as part of the treatment protocol to treat complications that appear in people with the emerging coronavirus.
Mujahid added, in statements to Masrawy Thursday, that the drug was included in the treatment protocol issued by the ministry, and is available in all isolation hospitals from the first day, and was used before that in the treatment of malaria.
He pointed out that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its approval of the exceptional use of hydroxychloroquine as one of the drugs that may have a positive effect in the treatment of Corona virus patients, so that data and information on the results of the use of this drug can be collected within the treatment protocol worldwide.

Sudanese scientist gives good news about Corona treatment

Source:
Electronic statement
Date: March 21, 2020
A Sudanese virologist has reported the possibility of a successful treatment for the emerging corona virus in the near future, and at a time when countries of the world are struggling to stop the spread of the virus, which the World Health Organization described as a "global epidemic."
Sudanese virologist Ibrahim Al-Amin Hajar, who received a doctorate in the characteristics of the Corona virus from the University of Colorado in the United States in 1977, told Sky News Arabia that there is great hope that the world will find a cure for the virus in the near future.
Hajar indicated that the production of some vaccines from the derivatives of bendazole drugs may fight the virus.
He explained that the Corona virus is distinguished from many other viruses by being relatively large, and if scientists were able to produce immune bodies from it in cultured cells and succeeded in isolating the four proteins that encapsulate its outer body and focus it and use it as antidotes, this would speed up the production of a vaccine that works against it or preventive vaccines.

Hajar expected that there will be many signs indicating that a significant percentage of the population of the Middle East has acquired immunity to the virus, indicating that the infection rates of the virus are not significant because of its nature, but its prevalence rates are the largest and most disturbing.
Hajar explained that the higher the degree of cold, the greater the possibility of the virus staying for a longer time, and thus its ability to penetrate the human body. On the other hand, Stone ruled out any relationship between skin color and the ability of the virus to penetrate the human body.

Japan's Fujifilm starts Avigan trial to treat coronavirus

TOKYO: Japan's Fujifilm has begun clinical trials to test the effectiveness of its anti-flu drug Avigan in treating patients with the new coronavirus, after reports of promising results in China.
Trials in China have suggested Avigan (generic name: favipiravir) could play a role in shortening the recovery time for patients infected with coronavirus.
"The trial will be conducted on 100 patients until the end of June," a company spokesman told AFP on Wednesday.
"We will collect data, analyse them and file for approval after that," he added.
The drug will be administered for a maximum of 14 days to coronavirus patients between 20 and 74 years old with mild pneumonia, the spokesman said.
China approves experimental coronavirus vaccine trials
Phuket: 3 new coronavirus cases

How will you know؟
The study excludes pregnant women due to side effects shown in animal testing, he added.
The phase three trial comes after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Saturday that the government "will begin the necessary process to formally approve (Avigan) as a treatment against the new coronavirus."
China has already completed clinical trials on favipiravir, the main ingredient in Avigan, the country's ministry of science and technology said last month.
Two trials in the country found the drug shortened recovery time for patients, but Fujifilm was not involved in those programmes.

Avigan is currently approved for manufacture and sale in Japan as an antiviral drug for flu.
"It is expected that Avigan may potentially have an antiviral effect on the new coronavirus" given the way it works on the flu virus, Fujifilm said in a statement announcing the trial.
Researchers and companies around the world are racing to find a cure for the new coronavirus, with the focus on existing medicines such as anti-malaria and anti-HIV drugs.
Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to treat malaria have shown early promise against the Covid-19 illness in early studies in France and China.
But experts urge caution until bigger trials demonstrate their effectiveness.
Medical researchers around the world are also working to find a vaccine for the virus, which has so far killed more than 42,000 people globally.

Pakistan awaits clinical trials for COVID-19 treatment
Scientists say they have prepared potential treatment with plasma obtained from recovered patients of coronavirus

Pakistan awaits clinical trials for COVID-19 treatment

KARACHI, Pakistan

Pakistani scientists are awaiting approval to start clinical trials for a treatment they claim can cure coronavirus.

A research team from Dow University of Medical Sciences, the country’s leading health institution, has devised intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) with plasma obtained from the blood of patients recovered from coronavirus, according to a statement.

The plasma teeming with anti-bodies was donated by patients after recovering from the illness.
Lab tests and animal trials were successful. The next step is to initiate clinical trials.
"This is a very important breakthrough in the war against COVID-19," professor Shaukat Ali, the head of the research team, told Anadolu Agency.
This way of treatment is safe, low risk and highly effective against coronavirus, Ali said.
He urged recovered coronavirus patients to donate blood as their plasma is the vital "raw material" for this treatment.
So far, over 1,000 coronavirus patients have recovered out of more than 5,000 reported cases in the country.
This method is also a type of passive immunization, he added.

Many countries across the world including Turkey, France and the U.S. are holding clinical trials for plasma therapy or transfusion to fight the novel virus.
However, the Pakistani doctor said, the treatment they have devised is safer and more effective than plasma transfusion as it does not carry the undesired component of blood like plasma proteins, potential bacterial and viral pathogens.
These treatments have globally been effectively used to curb other viral epidemics like MERS, SARS and Ebola, he said.
Scientists world over are grappling to find a cure for COVID-19 which has claimed over 114,000 lives globally after it appeared China last December.
More than 1.85 million people have been infected worldwide, while an upward of 434,000 have made a recovery, according to U.S.-based John Hopkins University.

Gulf News spoke to a specialist in internal medicine, Dr Smitha Muraletharan, from Aster Hospital in Al Ghusais, to find out how patients can be cured of coronavirus infection in general.

The simple answer: Through her own immune system.
“If you are healthy, you could just pass it off as a cough or cold,” Dr Muraletharan told Gulf News. “There’s no treatment or cure — just support to help your immune system clear it.”

With more than 40,000 cases and about 900 fatalities worldwide to date however, she explains that it needs containing to protect those of a weak immune system who have predispositions to falling sick easily.

Surprise
… the discovery of an antibody that kills corona in minutes

May 6, 2020

A group of scientists has discovered an antibody that can kill the new coronavirus, which causes Covid 19, in a few minutes. The researchers said in a report published by the network “NDTV”, they were able to create an antibody called “D1147” designed from the protein “Spike” from which the Corona virus is designed, according to “Sputnik”.

And laboratory tests succeeded in neutralizing the Corona virus very effectively, which is considered a scientific achievement in the treatment of “Covid 19”.

This antibody can fully reverse the course of “Covid 19” infection, if it is injected into humans, as it can provide protection to anyone who is uninfected or treats those who are already infected.

But before its application, the antibody should undergo an expanded number of clinical tests and trials.”This research is based on the work that our groups have done in the past on antibodies that targeted SARS, and in fact we have identified new antibodies that have the potential to change course,” the network quoted Professor Berende Jane Butch, co-author of the study, and researcher at the University of Utrecht. Infection in the infected host, support for virus removal, or protecting an uninfected person exposed to the virus. ”

“The ability of the antibody to neutralize all strains of the virus indicates that it may have the ability to alleviate diseases caused by coronaviruses arising in the future,” said Butch. “The development of these antibodies linked to the Spike protein, can prevent the virus from entering the cells of the body, and this is an interesting development.”

As Benny Ward, a professor of pharmaceutical medicine at King’s College London, said: “There are many animal models of Covid 19 infection, and without obtaining results from any studies in vivo, it cannot be concluded that the product will be effective in humans in vivo. An arthritis drug could be the answer everyone is looking for

ET Online|

A decade-old drug used to treat inflammation in arthritis patients could be the answer to the world's fears of the coronavirus.
Actemra, an anti-inflammation drug made by Swiss drugmaker Roche, has been approved by the Chinese government to treat severe coronavirus symptoms. This comes at a time when countries around the world are desperately searching for ways to combat the deadly infection.
The Swiss drug maker donated nearly $2 million worth of Actemra to China, its local operations said in a blog post on Monday.
According to reports, 14 serious and critically ill patients treated with existing medicines at a hospital affiliated with the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) showed positive results.
Since Actemra's approval a decade ago, it has become the go-to drug for inflammatory conditions, including cytokine storms in cancer patients receiving cell therapy.
The Swiss company, for which China is its No. 2 market behind the United States, is also making diagnostic gear to detect the coronavirus.

Abu Dhabi researchers and doctors have discovered a potential "breakthrough” COVID-19 treatment using stem cells that has secured backing from the UAE Ministry of Economy.

With the treatment currently being tested at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre, a video from the Dubai Media Office tweeted how the trial will be conducted.

According to the video, the stem cell treatment has been administered to 73 COVID-19 patients who recovered completely, which involved extracting stem cells from the patient’s blood and reintroducing them.

It added that medical trials to demonstrate the efficiency of the treatment is ongoing and is expected to be completed in two weeks.

An official of a giant American company gives good news about the Corona vaccine

An official at the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said that the new Coruna virus vaccine could arrive in October, pointing to the daunting challenges of needing 15 billion doses of the vaccine to completely eliminate corona, according to what was reported. The Times of Israel“.
The site said that a number of pharmaceutical companies announced Thursday that one or several new vaccines for the new Corona virus could be released before 2021.

The site pointed out that more than 100 laboratories around the world are in a race for a vaccine against the emerging virus, including 10 vaccines that have reached the stage of a clinical trial.

Albert Borla, the Pfizer president, was quoted as saying that his company believed the vaccine could be ready before the end of the year.

Pfizer is conducting clinical trials with German company Biontec on several possible vaccines in Europe and the United States.

“If all goes well, we will have enough evidence of safety and efficacy so that we can get a vaccine at the end of October,” Burla added.

In turn, Pascal Suryot, President of AstraZeneca, said in a hypothetical press conference that “the hope of many people is that we will have a vaccine, and we hope that we will have a sufficient number of it, by the end of this year.”

His company, Oxford University, is involved in the development and distribution of a vaccine being tested in Britain.

The website report indicates that it may take years for a new vaccine to be licensed for public use, but in the face of the Corona pandemic, experimental vaccines that are found to be safe and effective against the virus are likely to be approved for use in emergency situations.

One of the challenges for vaccine clinical trials is that infection rates are rapidly declining in Europe, where some of these trials are taking place.

Suryot said it would soon be so low that clinical vaccine trials could not be performed properly in a natural environment, adding that so-called “human challenge” studies in which people intentionally exposed to the virus to test for its efficacy were not morally acceptable with corona.

Many pharmaceutical companies around the world have suspended their clinical trials of other diseases to focus efforts on finding a vaccine for the Coronavirus.

Anti-parasitic drug killed coronavirus within 48 hours in lab: Australian scientists

Amid a barrage of research on finding treatment for coronavirus, Australian scientists have found that a common anti-parasitic drug killed SARS-CoV-2 virus within 48 hours in lab settings

Amid a barrage of research on finding treatment for new coronavirus, Australian scientists have found that a common anti-parasitic drug killed SARS-CoV-2 virus, growing in cell culture, within 48 hours in lab settings.

Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug that has also been shown to be effective in vitro against a broad range of viruses including HIV, dengue, influenza and zika virus.
Published in the journal Antiviral Research, the study from Monash University showed that a single dose of Ivermectin could stop the coronavirus growing in cell culture -- effectively eradicating all genetic material of the virus within two days.
"We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it," said study lead author Dr Kylie Wagstaff.
Dr Wagstaff, however, cautioned that the tests conducted in the study were in vitro and that trials needed to be carried out in people.
"Ivermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug. We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective - that's the next step," Wagstaff informed.
In times when we're having a global pandemic and there isn't an approved treatment, "if we had a compound that was already available around the world then that might help people sooner".
"Realistically it's going to be a while before a vaccine is broadly available," she said.
Although the mechanism by which Ivermectin works on the virus is not known, it is likely, based on its action in other viruses, that it works to stop the virus 'dampening down' the host cells' ability to clear it.
Dr Wagstaff made a previous breakthrough finding on Ivermectin in 2012 when she identified the drug and its antiviral activity with Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute's Professor David Jans, also an author on this paper.
Professor Jans and his team have been researching Ivermectin for more than 10 years with different viruses.
Dr Wagstaff and Professor Jans started investigating whether it worked on the SARS-CoV-2 virus as soon as the pandemic was known to have started.

The use of Ivermectin to combat COVID-19 depends on pre-clinical testing and clinical trials, with funding urgently required to progress the work, the researchers noted.

June Almeida with her electron microscope at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto in 1963.

June Almeida went on to become a pioneer of virus imaging, whose work has come roaring back into focus during the present pandemic.
Covid-19 is a new illness but it is caused by a coronavirus of the type first identified by Dr Almeida in 1964 at her laboratory in St Thomas's Hospital in London.
The virologist was born June Hart in 1930 and grew up in a tenement near Alexandra Park in the north east of Glasgow.
She left school with little formal education but got a job as a laboratory technician in histopathology at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Later she moved to London to further her career and in 1954 married Enriques Almeida, a Venezuelan artist.
Common cold research
The couple and their young daughter moved to Toronto in Canada and, according to medical writer George Winter, it was at the Ontario Cancer Institute that Dr Almeida developed her outstanding skills with an electron microscope.
She pioneered a method which better visualised viruses by using antibodies to aggregate them.
Mr Winter told Drivetime on BBC Radio Scotland her talents were recognised in the UK and she was lured back in 1964 to work at St Thomas's Hospital Medical School in London, the same hospital that treated Prime Minister Boris Johnson when he was suffering from the Covid-19 virus.
On her return, she began to collaborate with Dr David Tyrrell, who was running research at the common cold unit in Salisbury in Wiltshire.
Mr Winter says Dr Tyrrell had been studying nasal washings from volunteers and his team had found that they were able to grow quite a few common cold-associated viruses but not all of them.
One sample in particular, which became known as B814, was from the nasal washings of a pupil at a boarding school in Surrey in 1960.
They found that they were able to transmit common cold symptoms to volunteers but they were unable to grow it in routine cell culture.
However, volunteer studies demonstrated its growth in organ cultures and Dr Tyrrell wondered if it could be seen by an electron microscope.
They sent samples to June Almeida who saw the virus particles in the specimens, which she described as like influenza viruses but not exactly the same.
She identified what became known as the first human coronavirus.

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that have a halo or crown-like (corona) appearance when viewed under a microscope.

Mr Winter says that Dr Almeida had actually seen particles like this before while investigating mouse hepatitis and infectious bronchitis of chickens.
However, he says her paper to a peer-reviewed journal was rejected "because the referees said the images she produced were just bad pictures of influenza virus particles".
The new discovery from strain B814 was written up in the British Medical Journal in 1965 and the first photographs of what she had seen were published in the Journal of General Virology two years later.
According to Mr Winter, it was Dr Tyrrell and Dr Almeida, along with Prof Tony Waterson, the man in charge at St Thomas's, who named it coronavirus because of the crown or halo surrounding it on the viral image.
Dr Almeida later worked at the Postgraduate Medical School in London, where she was awarded a doctorate.
She finished her career at the Wellcome Institute, where she was named on several patents in the field of imaging viruses.
After leaving Wellcome, Dr Almeida become a yoga teacher but went back into virology in an advisory role in the late 1980s when she helped take novel pictures of the HIV virus.
June Almeida died in 2007, at the age of 77.
Now 13 years after her death she is finally getting recognition she deserves as a pioneer whose work speeded up understanding of the virus that is currently spreading throughout the world.

Follow the advice of your local authority to minimize your chances of getting or spreading the virus, in particular by washing your hands regularly, not touching your face and avoiding non-essential trips outside your home. If you're in any doubt, the impact of these measures is clear: in countries that have acted fast and taken social distancing seriously, the spread of the virus has been dramatically slowed or even contained.

In China, Singapore and other affected countries, social distancing played a big part in turning the tide. Acting early and following the advice is crucial, and we all have a part to play.

China has reported a drastic reduction in new cases, although this was achieved using extensive lockdown measures, which ended this week.
Singapore managed to contain the spread of the virus by acting fast, without imposing the draconian measures seen in China.
Hong Kong and Taiwan were able to tackle the virus thanks to their experience with SARS in 2002, teaching the world valuable lessons about investing time and resources into dealing with an outbreak.
Germany and Denmark are reopening small shops and schools and many countries have now reportedly passed their peaks of new cases.

We're working on a cure

Scientists around the world are looking for a coronavirus vaccine. It's essential not to rush this process, and it will take months or even years to develop the vaccine and make sure it's safe. But the work has begun and some promising avenues have already been identified.

Researchers have a head start as the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen is similar to coronaviruses we've encountered before, including the SARS virus that struck in 2002.

Clinical trials of potential vaccines are underway in China, testing methods of stimulating our immune system to fight the virus.

The first US clinical trials for a potential vaccine have begun in Seattle. Biotech company Moderna has taken a piece of the genetic code for the pathogen's S protein -- the part that's present in other coronaviruses, like SARS -- and fused it with fatty nanoparticles which can be injected into the body.

Imperial College London is designing a similar vaccine using coronavirus RNA, its genetic code.

Pennsylvania biotech company Inovio is generating strands of DNA it hopes will stimulate an immune response.

Johnson and Johnson and French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi are both working with the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to develop vaccines. Sanofi's plan is to mix coronavirus DNA with genetic material from a harmless virus, while Johnson and Johnson will attempt to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 and switch off its ability to cause illness.

In the meantime, existing antiviral drugs may have an effect on the new coronavirus, such as remdesivir or the anti-flu drug favipiravir.

Formula 1 racing engineers at Mercedes have joined forces with University College London to develop a breathing device that can be used instead of taking patients to intensive care and placing them on a ventilator.

Covid-19 vaccine: All you need to know about the next steps

© Provided by Khaleej Times Covid-19 vaccine: All you need to know about the next steps

With US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech applying for an emergency use authorisation in the United States for their coronavirus vaccine and US biotech company Moderna expected to do so soon, here are the next steps in the approval and distribution process:

- Evaluation begins right away -
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will immediately begin evaluating the results of the Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials conducted by Pfizer/BioNTech.
They will concentrate on the safety of the vaccine and its effectiveness, which has been billed at 95 per cent by Pfizer/BioNTech.
FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn said the approval process will include a public meeting of the FDA's vaccine advisory committee, which includes experts in infectious diseases, paediatrics, biostatistics and industry representatives.
The committee's recommendations are not binding, however, and a final decision on whether or not to authorize the vaccine will be up to the scientists at the FDA.

- Green light: December -
The FDA could provide emergency authorisation as soon as the first two weeks of December, according to Moncef Slaoui, the chief scientist for "Operation Warp Speed," the US government initiative to develop a Covid-19 vaccine.
It would be a conditional approval in the context of the global health crisis and would restrict distribution of the vaccine to certain members of the population.
Children, for example, would not be included because Pfizer has not yet conducted widespread testing of the vaccine among those under the age of 18.
Another US government agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), would determine the order of priority for distribution of the vaccine.
Front-line medical workers and elderly residents of nursing homes would probably be among the first to be inoculated.
In Europe, Britain, Canada, Japan and Australia, the process is slightly different and regulators there have been constantly reviewing the data from clinical trials being conducted by several manufacturers.
The European Union could give a green light to a vaccine as early as the second half of December, according to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

- Distribution: late December -
Pfizer/BioNTech said doses of the vaccine would be ready for distribution "within hours" after US authorization, which could mean shipments beginning in the second half of December.
They would initially be provided by a US factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a Belgian plant in Puurs.
The vaccine must be stored at -70 degrees Celsius (-94 degrees Fahrenheit), temperatures much colder than those of a standard freezer.
Pfizer would distribute the doses to vaccination centers in containers filled with dry ice which should keep the vaccine at the required temperature for 15 days.

- Next vaccines: early 2021 -
The Moderna Covid-19 vaccine could be ready for distribution soon after that of Pfizer/BioNTech and could be followed by February by that of Johnson and Johnson, according to Slaoui, with AstraZeneca/Oxford also expected in the next few months.
While high-risk groups will be the first vaccinated, the US government hopes that there will be enough vaccines by April 2021 to offer it to the broader population and provide high coverage by the summer.

TURKISH IMMIGRANTS’ CHILDREN BEHIND PFIZER’S COVID-19 VACCINE

Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech say their experimental vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19. Behind the vaccine, however, is an understated “dream team” of children of Turkish immigrants. BioNTech Chief Executive Ugur Sahin, 55, now figures among the 100 richest Germans, together with his wife and fellow board member Oezlem Tuereci, 53, according to weekly Welt am Sonntag. (Reuters Archive) A vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech has 90 percent effectiveness in preventing Covid-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials, the companies have announced.
The statement on Monday was released as soaring coronavirus cases across the world have forced many millions of people back into lockdown, causing further damage to ravaged economies.
European stock markets and oil prices jumped on the announcement.
And US President Donald Trump, who lost last week's election to Joe Biden in part over his administration's response to the pandemic, hailed the announcement as “such great news.”
Biden welcomed the development but said it doesn't change “urgent reality” that masks, distancing and other health measures are needed well into 2021.
Critical milestone
The companies said they expect to supply up to 50 million vaccine doses globally in 2020, and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.
“The first set of results from our Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine's ability to prevent Covid-19,” Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement.
“We are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis,” he said.
“We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development programme at a time when the world needs it most.”
UPDATE: We are proud to announce, along with @BioNTech_Group , that our mRNA-based #vaccine candidate has, at an interim analysis, demonstrated initial evidence of efficacy against #COVID19 in participants without prior evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
؟ Pfizer Inc. (@pfizer) November 9, 2020 BioNTech bosses are children of Turkish immigrants
The positive data on BioNTech and Pfizer's vaccine is, however, an unlikely success for the married couple behind the German biotech firm, who have devoted their lives to harnessing the immune system against cancer.
From humble roots as the son of a Turkish immigrant working at a Ford factory in Cologne, BioNTech Chief Executive Ugur Sahin, 55, now figures among the 100 richest Germans, together with his wife and fellow board member Oezlem Tuereci, 53, according to weekly Welt am Sonntag.
The market value of Nasdaq-listed BioNTech, which the pair co-founded, had ballooned to $21 billion as of Friday؟s close from $4.6 billion a year ago, with the firm set to play a major role in mass immunisation against the coronavirus.
Today is a great day for both science and humanity, as the first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides compelling evidence of our vaccine؟s ability to help prevent COVID-19. https://t.co/UjcoSD75tThttps://t.co/UjcoSD75tT
؟ AlbertBourla (@AlbertBourla) November 9, 2020 “Despite his achievements, he never changed from being incredibly humble and personable,” said Matthias Kromayer, board member of venture capital firm MIG AG, whose funds have backed BioNTech since its inception in 2008.
He added Sahin would typically walk into business meetings wearing jeans and carrying his signature bicycle helmet and backpack with him.
Doggedly pursuing his childhood dream of studying medicine and becoming a physician, Sahin worked at teaching hospitals in Cologne and the southwestern city of Homburg, where he met Tuereci during his early academic career.
Medical research and oncology became a shared passion.
Tuereci, the daughter of a Turkish physician who had migrated to Germany, said in a media interview that even on the day of their wedding, both made time for lab work.

؟ Rachael Ruble (@RachaelRuble) November 9, 2020 'Within the realms of possibility'
The BioNTech story took a twist when Sahin in January came across a scientific paper on a new coronavirus outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan and it struck him how small the step was from anti-cancer mRNA drugs to mRNA-based viral vaccines.
BioNTech quickly assigned about 500 staff to project “light speed” to work on several possible compounds, winning pharma giant Pfizer and Chinese drugmaker Fosun as partners in March.
Matthias Theobald, a fellow oncology professor at Mainz University who has worked with Sahin for 20 years, said his tendency towards understatement belies a relentless ambition to transform medicine, exemplified by the leap of faith to a Covid-19 vaccine.
“He is a very modest and humble person. Appearances mean little to him. But he wants to create the structures that allow him to realise his visions and that's where his aspirations are far from modest,” Theobald said.
Sahin told Reuters news agency on Monday the read-out amounted to an “extraordinary success rate” but that he did not know earlier in the year how difficult the task overall would be.
“It؟s certainly not something that you would easily voice as a serious scientist, but it was within the realms of possibility from the beginning.”

Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine: US will likely issue allergy warning, official says
AFP 8 hrs ago

If the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decides to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine, it will probably ask people with a known history of severe allergic reactions to not take it, a top government scientist said on Wednesday.
The news follows a similar warning in Britain after two health care workers suffered allergic reactions and needed treatment.
Both Britain and Canada have already approved the two-dose vaccine regimen on an emergency basis and the US is expected to follow suit within a matter of days, after an FDA advisory panel meets on the issue on Thursday.
Also read: Coronavirus: Pfizer chief insists no corners cut on vaccine testing
Coronavirus: Only half in US want Covid-19 vaccine as shots near, poll shows
Moncef Slaoui, who is the chief advisor to the US program for Covid vaccine and treatment development, told reporters: "Looking into the data, patients or subjects with severe allergic reaction history have been excluded from the clinical trial.
"I assume -- because the FDA will make those decisions -- that tomorrow this will be part of the consideration, and as in the UK, the expectation would be that subjects with known severe reactions, (will be asked) to not take the vaccine, until we understand exactly what happened here."
The FDA will probably also ask providers to watch for whether people develop a rare but temporary and not very serious form of facial paralysis called Bell's palsy, after data showed four people out of about 19,000 in the vaccine arm of the trial got the condition.
Overall, Slaoui said he was impressed by the vaccine data that had emerged in briefing documents submitted to the FDA, including importantly that strong protection began after the first dose -- though the recommendation remains to take both injections, 21 days apart.
It isn't known when exactly the regulatory agency could issue its emergency use authorisation but health secretary Alex Azar indicated that officials have early next week in mind.
General Gus Perna, who is overseeing logistics nationwide, said he had given the order Wednesday to begin distributing syringes, needles, alcohol wipes and dilutants required for the Pfizer vaccine, a process expected to be completed by Friday.
The US hopes to vaccinate 20 million people this month, with long-term care facility residents and health care workers at the front of the line.
The goal is to reach 100 million by the end of February and the whole population by June.
The next vaccines to receive approval might be those made by Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, and AstraZeneca, most likely in that order.

Urging the public to get the newly-rolled out Covid-19 vaccination in order to get "normalcy" back to life, an 84-year-old Emirati Ali Salem Ali Al Adidi was among the first few to take the jab on Wednesday.

Al Adidi, who has diabetes and who has previously had heart surgery, said he was approached by Dubai Health Authority officials to take the Pfizer- BioNTech vaccine as he was in the high-risk category and more vulnerable to Covid-19 given his age.

Being one of the oldest to receive the vaccine shot, Al Adidi said he has witnessed many plagues and diseases in his lifetime but was happy how the UAE leadership is handling the Covid-19 pandemic, trying to bring normalcy back to life by introducing precautionary measures. " Everyone must get the Covid-19 vaccine so we can get back to living like pre-Covid times and avoid any further lockdowns," he said.

Setting an example for the people of their city and showing their keenness to protect the public from risk of infection, a number of Emiratis as well as government employees came forward to volunteer for the newly rolled out Pfizer- BioNTech vaccination drive launched in Dubai on Wednesday. These included representatives from the Dubai Police, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Ambulance and DHA who willingly volunteered to take the vaccine that has a proven efficacy of up to 95 per cent.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has recently been approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and registered by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention.

In the first phase of the rollout of the campaign, the Dubai Health Authority said it will target four main categories; the first category includes Emirati and resident elders aged 60 years and above, people with chronic diseases and people of determination; the second category includes frontline workers in both the public and private sectors; the third category includes vital-sector workers; and the fourth category includes members of the public who wish to get vaccinated.

The first batch of Covid-19 vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech landed in Dubai from Brussels via Emirates SkyCargo late on Tuesday night. The shipment of the Pfizer vaccine was offloaded and cleared on a priority basis on arrival at Emirates' dedicated SkyPharma facility.

Geared up to store the Covid-19 vaccines, Emirates SkyCargo has set up the world's largest dedicated airside storage and distribution hub for Covid-19 vaccines in Dubai with the capacity to store up to an estimated 10 million doses of vaccine at the 2-8C temperature range at any one point of time.

The vaccinations will be available at six DHA health facilities that include: Zabeel Primary Health Care Centre, Al Mizhar Primary Health Care Centre, Nad Al Hamr Primary Health Care Centre, Barsha Primary Health Care Centre, Uptown Mirdif Medical Fitness Centre and Hatta Hospital.

UAE residents can register and book appointments for vaccination through the DHA app or the DHA's toll-free number 800 342.

Autopsies of COVID-19 patients reveal clotting concerns

A study of autopsy findings of the first 12 patients who died of COVID-19 in a hospital in Hamburg, Germany, has found that 7 (58%) of them had undiagnosed deep vein thrombosis, suggesting that the virus may cause abnormal blood clotting.

In the prospective cohort study, published yesterday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers discovered that the direct cause of death in four patients was massive pulmonary embolism from deep vein blood clots in the legs that lodged in a lung artery, causing a blockage.

High viral RNA loads, abnormal lung findings
High concentrations of COVID-19 genetic material were detected in the lungs, and also in the liver, kidney, or heart in five of six patients who had moderate viremia (COVID-19 viruses in the blood). All had abnormal lung computed tomography (CT) findings, and eight of them (67%) had alveolar damage indicative of early acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Most lungs were congested and heavy, with a maximum combined weight of 3,420 grams (more than 7.5 pounds) in one patient. Mean combined lung weight was 1,988 grams (4.4 pounds). In comparison, standard lung weights for men are 840 grams (1.9 pounds) and 639 grams (1.4 pounds) for women. Only two patients had relatively low lung weights (550 and 890 grams).

In many cases, the lungs showed signs of mild pleurisy, inflammation of the thin layers of tissue that separate the lungs from the chest wall, as well as a patchy pattern consisting of pale areas contrasting with slightly protruding, firm, reddish-blue areas with high capillary-to-fiber ratios. The lungs were firm but crumbled easily.

In the 10 patients who died in the hospital, initial laboratory tests showed elevated levels of lactate dehydrogenase (indicating tissue damage), D-dimer (indicating blood clots), and C-reactive protein (indicating inflammation or heart damage), as well as mild thrombocytopenia (low levels of platelets needed for clotting) in 4 of 10 patients.

Median patient age was 73 years (range, 52 to 87), 75% were men, and all had underlying medical conditions, the most common of which were coronary heart disease and asthma (50%) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (25%). Many were obese, with a mean body mass index of 28.7 kg/m2.

Anti-clotting drugs may decrease risk
The authors said that COVID-19 may lead to pulmonary embolism by activating the coagulation system or causing a cytokine storm, in which high levels of proinflammatory cytokines start to attack the body's own tissues rather than just the virus. Factors such as immune-mediated damage from antiphospholipid antibodies involved in autoimmune responses may also contribute.

Regardless of the cause, the researchers said that doctors should always suspect pulmonary embolism in COVID-19 patients who have deteriorating heart and lung function. "That patients with COVID-19 who have increased D-dimer levels, a sign of coagulopathy, may benefit from anticoagulant treatment seems plausible," they wrote.

They called for further research into the molecular mechanism and clinical incidence of coronavirus-related death and possible treatment options such as the use of anti-clotting therapies for COVID-19 patients.

As countries are beginning vaccination processes against the COVID-19 vaccine, the UAE has already reached a major global milestone.
With the aim of vaccinating half of the population by March, the nation now ranks first across the globe in the daily distribution of doses of coronavirus vaccines.
According to the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), the rate for vaccinations over the last seven days in the UAE has been 1.16 per 100 people.

NCEMA UAE
@NCEMAUAE
Dr. Saif Al Dhaheri: The UAE ranked first worldwide in terms of daily doses over the past seven days at a rate of 1.16 doses per 100 people, and fifth in terms of the availability of Covid-19 vaccines.
Reaching another milestone, the UAE has also now administered over two million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Sinophram vaccine
There are currently two vaccines available in the UAE, the first to being the Sinopharm vaccine.
The vaccine underwent clinical trials in Abu Dhabi during summer last year and it was confirmed by health authorities saying that the “analysis [from the trial of 31,000 people] shows no serious safety concerns”.
High-up government officials including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaab, the Minister of Culture and Youth and more have received the Sinopharm vaccine.

Pfizer vaccine
Then, at the end of December, the COVID-19 Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved to be administered in Dubai.
After undergoing numerous clinical trials, the vaccine has been found to have 95 per cent efficacy. Recently, the DHA outlined exactly who is currently eligible to receive the vaccine.
The vaccine has already started to be rolled out, with some government ministers already receiving their first doses. As of today, this now includes Director-General of the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) Her Excellency Mona Al Marri.
