Q 5: Scholarly Legacy
Q5: "So, to conclude our interview, I want us to ask a bit of a bigger picture question. So one great thing about legacy scholarship and working in academia is that our writing in some way becomes eternal, and people can be influenced by our ideas even when we are no longer here, and I know, of course, you have many more years of writing and rewriting and working ahead of you, but at this point of time what would you say you would like your greatest academic or scholarly work, like you see it to be؟ And in addition to that how do you think the next generation of scholars can build upon your work؟

A5: Oh! No! I don’t think I have an answer to that. It is because, I mean… the minute I say this is the best thing I did, or… then I have forfeited the claim by claiming it, and as I said earlier when I said that I am so grateful that I am free to speak my mind, that is to say whatever I … that includes not worrying about whether I am right or wrong, or not worrying about whether this is consistent with what I had said before or not. Like, it sounds chaotic, but speaking my mind as I have it when I have it is the ultimate freedom that I can seek, and hopefully realize partially, never fully. And maybe by next morning I will be thinking of something else. I think that is beautiful! I mean it is not having to stick by anything that, and defend anything that I have said before, because I said it before, that is why I think it is really tremendous blessing that I can speak freely, wrongly, contingently, whatever term to express non-conclusiveness. So in that sense, my hope, ya’ani, of course I am a Muslim, I ask Allah for blessings, and we are encouraged to name the blessings we seek, the blessing I would like to keep asking for is the blessing of being sort of free to think and to defend what I think and to act accordingly. Ustaz Mahmoud Mohammed Taha, my teacher, used to say freedom is about the ability to think what we choose, and to speak as we think, and to act as we believe also, and for all of it to be consistent with each other, that and rather the more profound way, and to defend what we do or say, or think, or believe. So, it is that holistic unity of the person. I have this idea, I hope if I have time to, maybe one time to go and visit; the notion of what I call the “sovereignty of the person”. I don’t believe that states are sovereign including this one. I don’t believe that any human institution can be sovereign. But I believe the human person can be sovereign, and it is that sovereignty of the person that I would like to have by being willing to defend what I speak of, and I speak it freely. That is what I would like to have. Not something that I have said, or might say some other day."

س 5: حسنا، في ختام هذه المقابلة، أود أن نتطرق إلى سؤال ذي نطاق أوسع قليلا، ذلك ما نعرفه في إطار العمل الفكري والأكاديمي أن مؤلفاتنا وكتاباتنا تصبح، بصورة ما، أبدية، ويمكن أن يكون لها أثرها على الناس، حتى عندما نغادر هذه الحياة الدنيا، وبالطبع أنا أعلم أن أمامك العديد من السنوات للتأليف وإعادة التأليف، والعمل الأكاديمي، ولكن في هذا الوقت تحديدا، ما الذي تحب أن ترى أنه أهم إنجازاتك الأكاديمية أو الفكرية؟ وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، كيف ترى أن الجيل القادم من المفكرين سيبني على مؤلفاتك وأعمالك؟

ج 5: أوه! لا! لا أعتقد أني أملك إجابة على هذا. نظرا لأنه، أعني.. لحظة أن أقول أن هذا أفضل عمل قمت به، أو .. فإنني أكون قد صادرت دعواي بمجرد إدعائي لها، وكما ذكرت سابقا، عندما قلت إني شاكر جدا لكوني حر في أن أقول ما أريد، وهذا يعني أن أقول ما أشاء، بما في ذلك أن لا أقلق بشأن ما إذا كنت على صواب أو خطأ، أو ما إذا كان ما أقوله متسقا مع ما قلته سابقا أم غير متسق. هذا ربما يبدو فوضويا أو عبثيا، ولكن كوني أتحدث بما أريد، كما يخطر لي، متى ما خطر لي، أعتقد أن هذه هي الحرية المطلقة التي يمكن أن أسعى لها، وآمل أن أجسدها، جزئيا، حيث لا يمكن، أبدا، أن أجسدها تمام التجسيد. ثم صباح اليوم التالي، ربما أفكر في شيء آخر. أعتقد أن هذا رائع، أعني أن لا أتقيد بأي شيء، وأن لا أدافع عن أي شيء قلته سابقا، لمجرد أني قلته سابقا. ولهذا السبب فإني أعتقد أن هذه نعمة عظيمة أن أستطيع الحديث بحرية، وعلى نحو خاطيء، وكيفما اتفق، أي مصطلح يمكن أن تختارينه للدلالة عن عدم الوثوقية والقطعية. وبهذا المعنى فإني أرجو، يعني، بالطبع أنا مسلم، وأسأل الله من نعمه، والله يحثنا على أن نرجوه ونعدّد نعمه علينا، والنعمة التي أرجو أن أواظب على طلبها هي أن أكون حرا لأفكر كما أريد، وأن أدافع عما أفكر فيه، وأن يكون عملي متسقا مع فكري. وقد كان الأستاذ محمود محمد طه، أستاذي، يقول إن الحرية هي القدرة على أن نفكر كما نريد، وأن نقول كما نفكر، وأن نعمل أيضا كما نفكر ونعتقد، على أن يكون كل ذلك في اتساق. وبصورة أعمق، أن ندافع عن ما نعمل أو نقول، أو ما نفكر فيه، أو نعتقده. وبذلك تتم لنا وحدة البنية البشرية. وأنا لدي هذه الفكرة، وآمل أن أجد الوقت، وربما في المستقبل أتطرق لذلك، وهي الفكرة التي أسميتُها "سيادة الفرد". فأنا لا أعتقد أن للدول سيادة، بما في ذلك هذه الدولة. كما لا أعتقد أن أي مؤسسة بشرية يمكن أن تكون ذات سيادة. ولكن أعتقد أن الفرد البشري يمكن أن يحقق السيادة، وهذه السيادة الفردية هي التي أود تحقيقها، بأن أكون مستعدا للدفاع عن ما أتحدث عنه، وأن أتحدث عمّا أفكر فيه بحرية. هذا ما أود تحقيقه. ولكن ليس شيئا قلته سلفا، أو ربما أقوله في يوم ما.
