Quote: Hajooj Kuka’s Sudan-focused film Beats of the Antonov (pictured) has won the People’s Choice Documentary Award at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival. The film follows refugees from the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains in Sudan as they use music as a way to survive the displacement and trauma of civil war. The doc picked up the prize, which is voted for by members of the public, at an awards brunch in Toronto today (September 14), the final day of the festival. David Thorpe’s doc Do I Sound Gay? was named first runner-up, while actor Ethan Hawke’s profile of pianist Seymour Bernstein, Seymour: An Introduction, was named second runner-up.
