مسؤول سوداني: الجيش الشعبي قتل 117 فنيا كانوا يعملون في حقول هجليج

LONDON (Dow Jones)--sudan is producing half as much oil as it did before fighting broke out in a key oil-producing region, said Mohammed Osman Akasha, a London-based spokesman for the country's government.

Akasha said bloody clashes between sudan and neighboring South sudan, near important oil facilities and fields, forced sudan to shutdown about 60,000 barrels a day production. Now sudan is producing about 55,000 barrels a day, compared with 115,000 barrels a day before South Sudanese troops took over an oil field, forcing operators and workers to flee.

With thin spare capacity, any additional production loss is important to the oil market and could provide further support for high prices, with the global benchmark Brent crude already trading near $120 a barrel.

Barclays said in a note published Monday that the crude oil supply and demand balance will likely tighten in the third quarter, as demand improves while supply disruptions in non-OPEC countries, like sudan, Yemen and Syria, takes exports off the market.

Parties from both sides said that as fighting continues, it is impossible to tell what damage has been caused to central processing facilities, a key infrastructure used to process oil both in the south and the north.

"We hope the SPLA [South sudan army] didn't destroy the oil facility," Akasha said, adding that almost half of all sudan's oil production is produced in Heglig, where fighting is taking place. "After SPLA occupied the city, they shut down the production and killed many civilians working on the oil field and approximately 117 technicians."

Atif Kiir, spokesman for the sudan People's Liberation Movement party, said sudan was the party attacking the disputed oil field in Heglig and said that they were responsible for damages. He also said the SPLA isn't attacking civilians.

The chief executive of Nilepet, South sudan's state oil company, said last week that he would send a team to investigate damages once the area was safe.

South sudan halted its roughly 350,000-barrels-a-day oil production in late January after accusing sudan of stealing its oil. The two were trying to hash out an agreement on oil transit fees and disputed border areas, but stopped negotiations after intense border fighting broke out, escalating hostilities between the two former civil war foes.
