i

This morning, thinking about the old Sudanese man who was killed on that grim Friday morning on January 1985, I was wondering what exactly went through his mind during those days before his death. He certainly made a choice: To Stand for What He Believes… Whether you are one of his foes and enemies or his followers and sympathisers, you will have to admit that M M Taha believed in his ideas and way of thinking and that he died a man honouring his beliefs. i

But this is just one reason I thought; a reason we can all see and understand. This old man also chose to speak, and tell us in clear words why he made the choice he is making: He didn’t say to his killers and persecutors: I am Right And Absolutely Confident of my Beliefs And That’s Why I Will Die For Them! No; instead he said: i

He was clearly not talking to them; he was not talking to Nemairi, not to Turabi and not Mahllawi either. He must have being talking to us: The Sudanese people. He must have believed in us too, just as he believed in his ideas and stance in life! He must’ve believed in the coming generations; believed that they will understand, one day, or learn one day… I thought of all that and said, he must have believed in me too! How beautiful and heart-warming! i

I look around this Sudanese cyber-sphere and wonder, was he wrong to believe in us so unconditionally?i
I think not… a man with a vision like his must have seen and expected all this! i

I want to believe that one day, the coming Sudanese generations of our troubled peoples will celebrate his message and embrace his gift to us… i I want to believe that the simple, clear ideas such as man’s right to think and dream will become so common-sense that no one like him would die to state them; and no one like me would ever need to write these words. i

I want to believe that there are a Sudanese people, in some coming future, who will celebrate his sacrifice for them as they celebrate sunrise and the simple good things in life… I want believe that, just as he believed in us.And I think I will. i

Abureesh

Every year in January, some of us will celebrate and reflect…
some of them will shout abuse, and even wield their daggers, in the face of the memory of this peaceful old man… i
Year by year, his memory will grow more meaningful!!i
Their shouts and screams will fade into the shadows, i
while his quite words will linger and last… i
If we believe in the deepest meanings of Mahmoud's gift to us, i
we will have hope in a better future, and that future will come… i
Thanks for coming to my little celebration of the memory of Mahmoud

Oh! This is very touching.
It sounds like the words of Rev. Martin luther King Jr.in his famous speech>

I have a dream.

Now it is a reality.

Thank you for these uplifting words ya Farda.
I mean ya Hafiz.

(see, I'm not that much younger than you after all! i)

?YOu think you will
!It is good to beleive so

,From Romeo & Julliet
!It is the balcony scene

Dear Hafiz, Salaam, I hope all is OK with you??

You said:
I want to believe that the simple, clear ideas such as man’s right to think and dream ill become so common sense that no one like him will die to state them; and no one like me would ever need to write these word.”

It is sad isn`t it? my friend, that some of us spend long hours, splitting hairs trying, desperately, to convince us that a martyr is not a martyr, simply because he was too original, innovative, daring and ahead of his time, now I recon by thousands of years.

I wonder, when our discourse, as people, moves on beyond the banal and cheap, address the real issues and hit the nail right on the head??

I disagree,if I may, people like yourself need to write continuously to see values such as those upheld and embodied by the late martyr M M Taha, where you wish to see them: right in the heart of the nation.
Regards

Adil

Thanks Adil and Degna for visiting this in-house celebration of the memory of M M Taha…
Degna, thanks for your kind words and let's keep the message of Mahmood alive… i

I agree, Adil, we need to write for a long time to come, to keep this fire alive; but my hope was that, one day, the meanings for which Mahmood paid his life, will become so common-sense (as they should really be!) in our land that we will celebrate them, rather the argue to stress them! i

Today is the 18th of January 2004, 19 years since the old Omdurmanite man said his words, smiled and left peacefully…
i
Let's reflect and think of him…i
