Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., from Logan West Virginia, is the winner of a one million dollar prize and will be trading in his shammy's for the bright lights of Las Vegas to headline in his own show. People all over the state are talking about it.

"I think it is great that someone from the West Virginia state has won and I think it'll help him and his family out a lot," says Emily Hall, a stylist at Trade Secret Salon in the Grand Central Mall.

Becky Sheehy, the manager of Trade Secret, says she thinks mountain state support help ensure Murphy's road to success because West Virginians look out for one another.

"I believe that we are a very strong state. We are very supportive, and hard working, and take care of each other," Sheehy says. "To see someone like that go on to national status is amazing."

One Mid-Ohio Valley mom says she watched the show as frequently as possible with her kids and feels that Americas Got Talent is a positive way for aspiring young artists to get their careers started.

"It's good to know that there are shows that have the platfrom for young aspiring artists and musicians so they can go on the shows and possibly get fast tracked into the profession that they are most interested in," says Melissa Galici.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Logan's Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. has been named champion of NBC's "America's Got Talent" hit show.

On Wednesday night Murphy was named the winner of a $1 million top prize and a headline show in Las Vegas. He beat out three other finalists.

Viewers had cast their votes after Tuesday's performance show.

Murphy's transformation from a car wash employee to a crooner and his mild-mannered, humble persona won over viewers. He sang Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in the finals.

NEW YORK (AP) - Soulful vocalist Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. has sung his way to victory on "America's Got Talent."

The mellow singer from Logan, W.Va., took the crown on Wednesday, scoring $1 million and a Las Vegas headlining contract.

He beat three other finalists on the season-ending broadcast of the NBC talent competition.

The other finalists were: teenage rock band PopLyfe from Oakland, Calif.; Team iLuminate, whose dancing performers equip themselves with wearable wireless lighting systems; and The Silhouettes, a troupe of youngsters from Arvada, Colo., who use shadow dancing to illustrate songs.

Murphy will headline at Caesars Palace next month, with the other three finalists also on the bill.

The uncanny Frank Sinatra sound-alike, who was raised on welfare and was homeless by the age of 19, was overcome with emotion and began tearing up when host Nick Cannon called his name.

“Thank you so much for believing in me and letting me be myself,” he said before receiving a group hug from the 42 members of Silhouettes, which came in second place.

“It has been a long hard journey. I have been busting my butt out here doing this for a long time -- since I was a kid.”

“He deserved to win,” last year’s runner-up, singer Jackie Evancho, told The Post last night.

The dreadlocked crooner sealed his victory Tuesday night with a rousing rendition of “My Way,” which judge Piers Morgan called his “million-dollar performance.”

“My whole thing was just to go to New York and sing Frank Sinatra songs without getting booed, without getting the X,” Murphy said of his decision to audition for the show. “This experience has changed my life tremendously.

“I started out as a dancer, impersonating Michael Jackson,” he said.
