At 6:15 this morning, Jack W. Szostak answers congratulatory calls after receiving the news that he had just won the 2009 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Szostak of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Molecular Biology and Harvard Medical School shares this year's prestigious scientific award with Elizabeth H. Blackburn of the University of California, San Francisco, and Carol W. Greider of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
.Jack W. Szostak, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), has won the 2009 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for work on cellular structures called telomeres, which protect chromosomes from degradation.

The work not only revealed a key cellular function, it also illuminated processes involved in disease and aging.

Szostak won the prize with Elizabeth H. Blackburn of the University of California, San Francisco, and Carol W. Greider of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for work the three did during the 1980s to discover and understand the operation of an enzyme called telomerase, which works to form protective caps called telomeres on the ends of chromosomes.

Subsequent research has shown that telomerase and telomeres hold key roles in cell aging and death and also play a part in aging of the entire organism. Research has also shown that cancer cells have increased telomerase activity, protecting them from death.

In addition to being a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, Szostak is the Alex Rich Distinguished Investigator in the MGH Department of Molecular Biology, a member of MGH’s Center for Computational and Integrative Biology, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

In recent years, Szostak’s work has explored the very beginnings of life, focusing on how the very first cells were created. He is a member of Harvard’s Origins of Life Initiative.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — If Nobel judges are looking to improve the balance of women winning the chemistry prize, Israeli scientist Ada Yonath could be a strong candidate when the award is announced Wednesday.

Yonath's pioneering work in understanding how cells build proteins could make her a contender, possibly along with American George Feher. In 2006 the two shared the Wolf Prize in chemistry, which can sometimes serve as a barometer of future Nobel winners.

Only three women have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry and none since 1964 when Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin of Britain received the prize for her work using "X-ray techniques of the structures of important biochemical substances."

Other possible candidates include Americans Stuart Schreiber and Gerald Crabtree for research in chemical biology that has shed light on how tiny molecules can be used on cell circuits and signaling pathways."

"The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2009 awards studies of one of life's core processes:
the ribosome's translation of DNA information into life. Ribosomes produce proteins, which in turn control the chemistry in all living organisms. As ribosomes are crucial to life, they are also a major target for new antibiotics.

This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry awards Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath for having showed what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level. All three have used a method called X-ray crystallography to map the position for each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome.

Inside every cell in all organisms, there are DNA molecules. They contain the blueprints for how a human being, a plant or a bacterium, looks and functions. But the DNA molecule is passive. If there was nothing else, there would be no life.

The blueprints become transformed into living matter through the work of ribosomes.

Based upon the information in DNA, ribosomes make proteins: oxygen-transporting hemoglobin, antibodies of the immune system, hormones such as insulin, the collagen of the skin, or enzymes that break down sugar. There are tens of thousands of proteins in the body and they all have different forms and functions. They build and control life at the chemical level.

An understanding of the ribosome's innermost workings is important for a scientific understanding of life. This knowledge can be put to a practical and immediate use; many of today's antibiotics cure various diseases by blocking the function of bacterial ribosomes. Without functional ribosomes, bacteria cannot survive. This is why ribosomes are such an important target for new antibiotics.

This year's three Laureates have all generated three-dimensional models that show how different antibiotics bind to the ribosome. These models are now used by scientists in order to develop new antibiotics, directly assisting the saving of lives and decreasing humanity's suffering".

X-ray crystallography is a method of determining the arrangement of atoms within a crystal, in which a beam of X-rays strikes a crystal and diffracts into many specific directions. From the angles and intensities of these diffracted beams, a crystallographer can produce a three-dimensional picture of the density of electrons within the crystal. From this electron density, the mean positions of the atoms in the crystal can be determined, as well as their chemical bonds, their disorder and various other information.

Since many materials can form crystals — such as salts, ####ls, minerals, semiconductors, as well as various inorganic, organic and biological molecules — X-ray crystallography has been fundamental in the development of many scientific fields.

أُقيم أوّل إحتفال لتقديم جائزة نوبل في الآداب، الفيزياء، الكيمياء، والطب في الأكاديمية الملكية الموسيقية في مدينة ستوكهولم السويدية سنة 1901. وابتداءً من سنة 1902، قام الملك بنفسه بتسليم جائزة نوبل للأشخاص الحائزين عليها. تردّد الملك "أوسكار" الثاني، ملك السويد في بداية الأمر في تسليم جائزة وطنية لغير السويديين، ولكنه تقبّل الوضع فيما بعد لإدراكه لكمية الدعاية العالمية التي ستجنيها السويد.

الجائزة:
الجائزة هي عبارة عن شهادة وميدالية ذهبية ومبلغ مالي. منذ سنة 2001 تحددت الجائزة المالية بعشرة ملايين كرونة. واذا حصل أكثر من شخص على الجائزة في نفس المجال يتم تقسيم المبلغ عليهم ولا يشترط أن يقسم بالتساوي.

الترشيح والاختيار:
للحصول على جائزة نوبل لابد من الترشيح أولا، ولا يتم الترشيح إلا لأشخاص على قيد الحياة. وحق الترشيح يكون للأشخاص الحاصلين على الجائزة من قبل، كما يكون الحق في الترشيح في مجالات الفيزياء والكيمياء والطب والاقتصاد لأعضاء لجنة نوبل الخاصة بكل مجال ولأكاديمية العلوم ولأساتذة أي من هذه المجالات في جامعات اسكندنافية معينة وكذلك بعض الأشخاص المختارة من أعضاء هيئة التدريس في بعض الجامعات الأخرى. وبالنسبة لجائزة نوبل في الآداب فيمكن تقديم اقتراحات الترشيح من قبل أساتذة الآداب والبحث اللغوي وأعضاء الأكاديمية السويدية والهيئات المشابهة ورئيس رابطة الكُتاب الممثلة. أما اقتراحات الترشيح لجائزة نوبل للسلام فيمكن أن تأتي من أي عضو من أعضاء الحكومات أو إحدى المحاكم الدولية كذلك من أساتذة الجامعة في مجالات العلوم الاجتماعية والتاريخ والفلسفة والحقوق والعلوم الدينية ورؤساء معاهد البحث المتخصصة في مجال السلام أو غيرها من المؤسسات الشبيهة.




انتقادات لجائزة نوبل:
عدم الحياد منذ ان منحت اول جائزة في العام 1901 تولد عن ذلك نقد لاذع ومعارضة وتشكيك في حيادية الجائزة و من اهم الانتقادات التشكيك في نزاهتها خاصة في مجال السلام و الاقتصاد حيث كانت دول الكتلة الاشتراكية و الاتحاد السوفيتي تقول ان الجائزة في الاقتصاد تمنح فقط لاصحاب الفكر الاقتصادي الرأسمالي وقد لاقى اختيار فرانسيس فوكاياما لجائزة نوبل في الفيزياء انتقادات لاذعة وقيل ان هذا تكريس ل الليبرالية و القيم الغربية و كذلك فان جائزة نوبل للسلام يشكك في حياديتها خاصة الجوائز التي منحت لبعض الرؤساء وقد لاقى اختيار محمد انور السادات لجائزة نوبل للسلام بعد اتفاقية كامب ديفيد رفضا من الدول العربية والاسلامية الرافضة للتطبيع مع اسرائيل . عدم تخصيص جائزة للرياضيات من انتقادات جائزة نوبل عدم تخصيصها جائزة للرياضيات. وكذلك تم التشكيك في حيادية الجائزة بعد ان فاز اكثر من شخص من اسرة واحدة بها فاسرة (كوري)الفرنسية فاز منها خمسة اشخاص بالجائزة.


حصل على جائزة نوبل أكثر من مرة أربعة أشخاص فقط حتى الآن:

ماري كوري (1903 في الفيزياء و1911 في الكيمياء)
لينوس باولنغ (1954 في الكيمياء و1962 في السلام)
جون باردين (1956 و1972 في الفيزياء)
فردريك سانغر (1958 و1980 في الكيمياء)
ويعتبر لينوس باولنغ هو الوحيد في هذه المجموعة الذي لم يقتسم أي من الجائزتين مع أحد.

وحصلت المفوضية العليا للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين سنة 1954 وسنة 1981 على جائزة نوبل للسلام. كما حصلت اللجنة الدولية للصليب الأحمر على الجائزة ثلاث مرات في الأعوام 1917 و1944 و1963 وذلك لمجهوداتها في مجال السلام، واقتسمت الجائزة في سنة 1963 مع الاتحاد الدولي لجمعيات الصليب الأحمر.

الأكبر سناً والأصغر سناً:
ريموند ديفيس جونيور هو حتى الآن الأكبر سناً من الحاصلين على جائزة نوبل، والذي حصل في سنة 2002 على الجائزة وهو في سن 88. وأصغر الحاصلين على جائزة نوبل هو وليم لورنس براغ والذي حصل في سنة 1915 على الجائزة في الفيزياء وهو في سن 25. وأصغر السيدات الحاصلات على جائزة نوبل هي ريغوبيرتا مينتشو والتي حصلت على جائزة نوبل للسلام سنة 1992 وهي في سن 33. بعد وفاة الفيزيائي جوزيف روتبلت في عام 2005 أصبحت ريتا ليفي مونتالتشيني هي أكبر الأشخاص سناً من الحاصلين على جائزة نوبل مازالت على قيد الحياة.

العرب و جائزة نوبل:
منطقة الشرق الأوسط هي من أقل المناطق التي فاز سكانها بجائزة نوبل و قد فاز خمسة عرب بالجائزة هم الرئيس المصري محمد أنور السادات بعد توقيعه لاتفاقية كامب ديفيد وقد حصل السادات على الجائزة مناصفة مع الرئيس الاسرائيلي مناحيم بيجن سنة 1978 وأيضا حاز على جائزة نوبل للسلام الرئيس الفلسطيني ياسر عرفات بعد اتفاقية اوسلو عام 1994 وحصل عليها مناصفة مع رئيس وزراء اسرائيل اسحاق رابين ووزير خارجيته شمعون بيرز و الدكتور أحمد زويل المصري الجنسية الفائز بجائزة نوبل في الكيمياء و الاديب نجيب محفوظ و الدكتور محمد البرادعي الرئيس السابق لمنظمة الطاقة النووية الفائز بجائزة نوبل للسلام .كان الاديب السوداني الطيب صالح من ابرز الاسماء المرشحة لجائزة نوبل للاداب للعام 2009 عن روايته الشهيرة [[موسم الهجرة الى الشمال]] الا انه توفي قبل ذلك في نفس العام ومن شروط الجائزة ان تمنح للاحياء فقط .هناك عدد من العرب فازوا بالجائزة بلاشتراك مع الاخرين وهناك عرب كانوا من اهم اعضاء فرق الابحاث والمراكز البحثية التي حصلت على الجائزة.

of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.''

The 56-year-old author, who emigrated to Germany from then-communist Romania in 1987, made her debut in 1982 with a collection of short stories titled ``Niederungen,'' which was promptly censored by the Romanian government. In 1984 an uncensored version was published in Germany and her work depicting life in a small, German-speaking village in Romania was devoured by readers.

That work was followed by ``Oppresive Tango'' in Romania. Because of her vocal criticism of Romania's government, and its feared secret police, she and her husband left the country".

ككيان أساسي يمكنه إحداث تغيير وتطور في المجتمع
في كل المجالات نحو الأحسن إذا أتيحت لهن الفرصة
بالطبع كما ذكرتي عزيزتي...


الدول المتقدمة تهتم بالبحث بصورة عامة على إختلاف وتباين
مجالاته وبالبحث العلمي بصفة خاصة وتعتبره ركيزة أساسية
وتضع له ميزانية خاصة مثله مثل الصحة والتأمين الصحي للمواطن
مثلا والتعليم وغيرها من أساسيات إحتياج المجتمع بل ترعيه
إهتماما أكثر من ذلك لأهميته القصوى فلولا البحوث
لم عرفت العلوم المختلفة أصلا ولما تطورت.

Obama is the third sitting U.S. president to win the award: President Theodore Roosevelt won in1906 and President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919.


The Norwegian Nobel Committee lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation but recognized initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change".

Former Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, said Obama has already provided outstanding leadership in the effort to prevent nuclear proliferation.

"In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself," ElBaradei said. "He has shown an unshakeable commitment to diplomacy, mutual respect and dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts."

Obama also has attempted to restart stalled talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, but just a day after Obama hosted the Israeli and Palestinian leaders in New York, Israeli officials boasted that they had fended off U.S. pressure to halt settlement construction. Moderate Palestinians said they felt undermined by Obama's failure to back up his demand for a freeze.
