Give the organisation plenty of reasons why you are worth it
Assess your value
• Match your value to what the company values. For example, what are your key results areas (KRA s) or main objectives? Measure your performance against these.
• Are you able to put a financial value on yourself? It could be the amount of sales revenue generated, or alternatively the amount of money you have saved the company through cost savings or productivity improvements.
• What is your replacement value? How does your salary compare to others within the company doing a similar role or the industry average?
• What is your value as a team member? You are valuable if you get on well with people, both inside and outside the department (and company), are positive and encourage others to perform well.
How to expand your skills
• List your skills which are the most valuable to the organisation? Now determine the ones you are good at already and the areas where you are not. How easy is it to gain these skills and how long will it take?
• It is worthwhile involving your boss to ensure your assumptions are correct about the kinds of skills worth acquiring and whether there is budget available for possible training courses.
Improving your image
• How are you currently viewed? Reliable, trustworthy, determined, self-motivated, creative, dynamic, confident? What about your appearance and level of professionalism?
• What qualities does the company value? Regardless of where you work, the following tips are worth considering:
Speak clearly and sound interested, making regular eye-contact.
Project energy and enthusiasm.
Look on the positive side of any issue.
Be a good listener.
Show interest in people.
Display a sense of humour.
Display trust and reliability by keeping confidences, refrain from gossip and meet your deadlines.
Make yourself visible! Ensure your contributions get noticed by those who matter.
How to work better
• How well organised are you?
• Do you manage your time effectively by forward planning your day/week/month and list action points and reminders?
• Do you prioritise your workload according to your key results areas?
How to deal with people
• Always be cool and calm under pressure
• Be assertive.
• Treat others as equals and make sure they treat you in the same way.
• Don t forget that you have the right to hold your own opinion. Be honest and stand by what you say.
• For dealing with difficult situations in a non-confrontational manner, use the feedback technique.

Suggest a solution; negotiate if necessary
Problem solving creatively
• Regardless of what kind of job you currently hold, there will always be a need to think about problems in a more imaginative way. There are several ways this can be achieved; however, the following is just one example.

• Make suggestions for each component, no matter how daft the idea sounds. This is best carried out as a team to generate plenty of suggestions and enthusiasm in the project.
• Write or draw up options
• Be mindful of budget, time or objective constraints and then narrow down the options.

• Establish your key results areas
• Manage your time
• Plan medium and short term goals for creating and achieving your success.
• Submit proposals in writing as spoken ones get modified
• Monitor proposals through to completion, making any changes required to ensure success
