Amnesty International have just launched an interactive viral web action: Protect the People of Darfur: Send UN Peacekeepers now!

The interactive petition targets the UN Security Council. The idea is that participants send a virtual peacekeeper to Darfur - activists are asked to sign the petition by adding their blue helmets to a map of the region.

At midday on 14 September 2006 approximately 16 armed men riding camels and wearing military and civilian clothing attacked a group of IDPs from Otash IDP camp.

The IDPs were attacked whilst they were on their way from Otash to Douma IDP camp, approximately 10 Km east of Otash. At least four people were killed and nine wounded with gunshots. The survivors are receiving medical treatment at Nyala Teaching Hospital.

Background

The Security situation throughout Darfur continues to deteriorate despite the signing of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) between the Government of Sudan and one faction of the armed opposition group Sudan Liberation Army (SLA). All parties to the conflict continue to violate international human rights and humanitarian law with impunity. Despite honourable efforts, the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) has neither the mandate nor resources necessary to effectively protect civilians.

SOAT calls on the Government of National Unity (GoNU) to immediately commit to taking all steps necessary to prevent attacks, threats, intimidations and any other form of violence against the people of Darfur.

In particular, SOAT calls on the GoNU to:

i) Commit to the deployment of an international peacekeeping mission in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 1706 (2006) adopted on August 31, 2006.

ii) Support the renewal and strengthening of the AMIS mandate until the effective deployment of an international peacekeeping mission

iii) Ensure that the incident is investigated immediately and that perpetrators are brought before an impartial tribunal and guaranteed procedural rights at all times

iv) End impunity for crimes committed by government forces and its proxy militias in Darfur

v) Guarantee respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
