Former Sudanese slave to Lead Historic 300-Mile Walk
To be Joined by Former NBA Star Manute Bol

NEW YORK: Former Sudanese slave, Simon Deng and Former NBA Player Manute Bol will lead a 300-mile walk from New York to Washington, DC, from March 15 - April 5.

The walk will begin Wednesday, March 15 at 1:00 PM, at UN Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, (47th and 1st Ave.) where Deng will hold a press conference.


The purpose of the walk is to shed light on the genocide and modern-day slavery in Sudan, and call for U.S. government action to stop the violence and enslavement of black African Sudanese.


Manute Bol, known for his advocacy on behalf of Sudan, is the second tallest player to appear in the NBA and holds the all-time NBA record for the most blocked shots per minute. Spanning five states, the walk will stop in 19 cities -- including Philadelphia and Baltimore -- and will end in front of the Capitol on April 5th.

The Sudan Campaign supports the following:



That the U.S. Congress pass the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act without delay, provide $514 million in emergency funding called for by the President to support humanitarian and peacekeeping programs in Darfur, and adopt Senate Resolution 383 to strengthen the peacekeeping efforts;

That President Bush appoint a new Special Envoy for Sudan, and the U.S. Government use all available means to increase pressure on the Government of Sudan until peace is secured throughout the country by implementing the provisions of the Sudan Peace Agreement.

That the U.S. State Department reclassify the Government of Sudan as a Tier 3 Nation with regard to Human Trafficking (the worst classification possible) for its failure to make significant progress to eradicate slavery and that the U.S. establish an independent anti-slavery commission to monitor slavery and its eradication in
Sudan.


At nine, Deng, a native of Southern Sudan was captured and sold to an Arab family in Northern Sudan. He was enslaved for over three years until he escaped. Now 44, Deng speaks on his difficult childhood and about the atrocities that continue to plague Sudan. One of the first 40 Sudanese to come to the US on political asylum, Deng has emerged a national leader among the 250,000 Sudanese Refugees now living in the US. http://www.sudanfreedomwalk.org

عندما كان دينق ابن جنوب السودان في التاسعة من
عمره بيع الي اسرة عربية من شمال السودان استعبدته
اكثر من ثلاث سنوات الي ان تمكن من الفرار. ان دينق
الذي هو الان في الرابعة والاربعين من عمره يتحدث عن
طفولته المعذبة والفظائع المستمرة التي تجتاح السودان.
لقد برز دينق، الذي كان ضمن اربعين سودانيآ هم من
اوائل الذين وصلوا امريكا كملاذ سياسي، زعيمآ وطنيآ
وسط ربع مليون لاجئ سوداني يعيشون في الولايات

شكرا على المداخلتين الكريمتين .. ثم شكرا على
افتقادكم لنا .. فاننى ياأخى أدخل " صالون " الضيوف
بين الفينة والأخرى .. فأجد صاحب الدار مشغولا .. وكثيرا
لم أجد به أصدقائى القدامى .. وان وجدت بعضا منهم ..
.. أراهم يتحاشون النظر الى ..
وهنا أتساءل .. هل هذا من شيم السودانيين الأصلاء .. أم هذه الصفات أصبحت
مألوفة .. نتيجة لمستجدات هذا العصر .. وظروفه الصعبة ..

ولكن .. وجب علينا نحن ألا نهتم بزيد من الناس .. فلابد من أصحاب الأقلام
الحرة أن تكتب .. ولابد من الأصلاء التوجيه دون وقوف أو استكانة حتى نغير
تلك المفاهيم الدخيلة على الشعب الطيب .. ومن يدرى فقد تتغير الأحوال ..

شكرا أخى مرة أخرى .. وعاش السودان بشعبه .. ولكن كل فرد خرج من السودان
انما هو خسارة على السودان .. وستثبت الأيام .. سيظهر من الجيل القادم من فوج السودانيين
المطرودين بعقليات جبارة تتألق فى بلاد المهجر .. تتعلم وتتثقف ثم تبرز فى مجالات شتى ..
لتجد فرصا ومناخا للتحصيل والتفوق .. وللأسف الشديد .. لا يمكن أن يتوفر هذا.. داخل السودان ..
فليتنا نعى قبل فوات الأوان .. ونقول للكحومة .. لا تقتلوا المواهب .. ثم لا تكبلوا
العقول بسلاسل التخلف والكبت ..
