Quote: Dear Shams Eldein,,

I am writing on behalf of The Mosaic Institute (www.mosaicinstitute.ca) to invite you to participate in a conference that we are convening at the University of Winnipeg on behalf of Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). Entitled "Sudanese-Canadians and the Future of Sudan", this small, invitation-only conference on Thursday, September 2, 2010 is part of an ongoing set of discussions that DFAIT has been and will continue holding with members of the Sudanese community across Canada. This particular event will afford a unique opportunity for community leaders from different parts of Canada, as well as from different regional, tribal, political, religious and linguistic groups of Sudan, to come together in one room at one time to discuss the present and future realities in Sudan and their implications for Canada. You have been selected to attend and participate in this conference because of the respected role you play
within the broader Sudanese community in Canada.

In addition to keynote addresses by senior officials of DFAIT, this one-day conference will feature a number of panel sessions featuring presentations from both government officials and community representatives, as well as moderated roundtable sessions addressing topics of direct and timely relevance to Canadian priorities and interests with respect to Sudan. Key topics to be addressed will include:

- Key Challenges to Development in Sudan
- Canada and Sudan after the 2011 Referendum
- Human Rights & Conflict: Darfur and Beyond; and
- The Sudanese-Canadian Diaspora and Canada's Role in Sudan.

Please note that DFAIT will issue a "travel letter" to you if you accept this invitation, which will reimburse the cost of your travel to Winnipeg and your overnight hotel accommodation. However, that you will be required to pay for your own flight and hotel costs up front, and then submit the proper receipts to DFAIT before receiving reimbursement several weeks after the conference. Unfortunately, neither DFAIT nor the Mosaic Institute is in a position to pay for your travel and accommodation costs up front.

If you are interested in attending and participating in the "Sudanese-Canadians and the Future of Sudan" conference on September 2, please reply to our Consultant on Sudan, Mr. Mahgoub S. Khair, by direct e-mail at [email protected], or contact him by phone at 416-644-6000, ext. 670. Please be so kind as to reply to this invitation as soon as possible, but in any event by no later than Monday, July 26.

Yours very truly,

Quote: Sudanese-Canadians and
the Future of Sudan
Winnipeg Conference 2010
Presented by the Mosaic Institute on behalf of
Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade

This one‐day conference for key representatives of the leadership and membership of the Sudanese diaspora from across Canada is being convened by The Mosaic Institute
(www.mosaicinstitute.ca, a Toronto‐based charitable organization that seeks to harness Canada’s ethno cultural diversity to promote peace and development abroad. Sudan is one of the Institute’s areas of geographic focus. This conference is being held with the support and participation of the Sudan Task Force at Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), as well as with the participation of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). It is intended to engage those residents and citizens of Canada who possess first‐hand, expert knowledge of Sudan
in an open, multi‐directional discussion about the most pressing humanitarian, economic and political issues facing Sudan, and the challenges and opportunities facing Canada as a major contributor of aid and other forms of assistance to the people of Sudan. The content of this conference is inspired in part by the findings of a report on the distribution, organization and foreign policy priorities of the Sudanese diaspora in Canada that was prepared by the Mosaic Institute in 2009, entitled “Profile of a Community: A ‘Smart Map’ of the Sudanese Diaspora in Canada”. The content has been further inspired by subsequent, ongoing and anticipated events in Sudan that do or could bear directly upon Canada’s interests as a major provider of humanitarian aid, development assistance, and military protection for the civilians of Southern Sudan and Darfur, in particular. This event will provide an important opportunity for Canadian government officials and Sudanese‐Canadian “citizen experts” to discuss issues
that are of crucial importance both to the people of Sudan and to the government and
people of Canada. The conference will be held in Convocation Hall at the University of Winnipeg on Thursday, September 2, 2010, from 8:00am until 5:15pm. Appropriate arrangements will be made for those observing Ramadan, including the provision of a separate room for prayers. We are looking forward to having you join us as a “citizen expert” of your community and an honoured guest of the Mosaic Institute.
Sincerely,
The Mosaic Institute
Toronto, Ontario

Quote:

Multicultural Council
