Quote: Going further, is not rare to find cases of conflicts of the identity systems. (ex. A young guy during the interview told me : “I am Nuba, Cororo”. Since his father is a Cororo, that means that after marking his “nuba-ness”, he chose to recognize himself with the Islamic patrilineal system. The day after I met him in the market and he told me : “Sorry, yesterday I was wrong, I am not a Cororo, but I am a Miri” (his mother group). This switch could be due either to the prestigious position occupied by the Miri among the Islamized Nuba groups, or to a return to the traditional matrilineal Nuba system. I also found important identity incongruence within specific groups which reveal the different degree of the on-going arabization process. An example is that of the Shawabna. The Shawabna come from Jebel Shaibuun (north-west Nuba Mountains) and are historically recognized as a “Nuba” group, notwithstanding this we find a relatively recent established ‘Omdiyya among the Awlad Nuba (Hawazma) called Shawabna. Now, approximately half of my Shawabna respondents recognize themselves as an Arab group, the second half continue to claim the “nuba” affiliation. This can be due to the cultural dominant position occupied by the Nuba in Kadugli.
