How `good boy' inherited the Bhutto brand name TheStar.com - columnists - How `good boy' inherited the Bhutto brand name January 03, 2008 Haroon Siddiqui
The ascension to the throne of the Pakistan Peoples Party was carried out with autocratic efficiency
The husband of the dear departed leader read out her will to loyal courtiers behind closed doors
He had been anointed successor
Just as arbitrarily, he had anointed their son instead
But, the boy being only 19, he, the father, was going to keep the keys to the kingdom for some years
The retainers, hangers-on and party officials, including one in Canada, dutifully hailed the twin decisions: "He is a good boy." "The father will be a good regent."
But some other members of the feuding feudal Bhutto clan disagreed
One complainant was an aging uncle of the slain Benazir Bhutto
Mumtaz Bhutto is the first cousin of her late father, Zulkfiqar Bhutto, the founder of the dynasty and a former prime minister (1973-77). During his tenure, "Zulfi" had seen to it that Mumtaz became premier of their native Sindh province
Mumtaz was miffed that Benazir handed over the family heirloom to her husband. His concern was not that Asif Zardari is venal and uncouth; had spent years in jail; and faced charges in Europe for money-laundering and related offences. No, Mumtaz's point was that Zaradari was not a Bhutto. He was a usurper
Alert to such bruised sensibilities and, more importantly, to the Bhutto brand name, Zardari had already renamed the son, Bilawal Zardari, to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. It will no doubt soon be just Bilawal Bhutto
The Zardari-Bilawal coronation was decorated with the appropriate props and symbols
Benazir's framed picture was carried from the PPP meeting to the news conference. The "martyred" leader had been buried next to the father at the imposing family mausoleum – two brothers who had preceded her (one killed in a police ambush, another poisoned) having been laid to rest in a corner
Bilawal has not lived in the country he's expected to lead. He barely speaks Sindhi or Urdu, the national languages. But it doesn't matter
Western reporters, invited to the media-savvy family's inner sanctum, gushed over the young prince. He was handsome. He sported Armani glasses. He had a soft British accent. He had no girlfriend. "His mother wouldn't allow it," revealed an uncle/tutor
Zardari and the PPP were all set for next Tuesday's election, keen to cash in a potential sympathy vote
The election was part of a U.S.-brokered, media-hyped deal for Benazir to become prime minister under President Pervez Musharraf, however much the two disliked each other. With her tragic death, perhaps a PPP operative could be PM, with Zardari as the kingmaker
The Muslim League party, led by Nawaz Sharif – another discredited former prime minister, also known for corruption and nepotism – wasn't offering much either, except that he disliked Musharraf more
The decision to put off the poll to Feb. 18 is sensible, given the general instability and the destruction of polling stations in recent rioting
The delay offers an opportunity for the beleaguered nation to catch its breath, and for all political parties to enter the fray, offer fresh ideas and new candidates rather than the usual politics of personalities and feudal dynasties
Zardari himself should run. Sharif, disbarred due to pending charges, should be allowed to. Smaller parties should be encouraged to participate.
The international community should press for a fair election monitored by neutral observers. That way, the vote would be less of a charade than it was destined to be
