I hope this article does not disappear in the black hole of the collective amnesia that inflicts Sudanese these days. Machakos is an illusion that the NIF managed to use to to gain time. It is an illusion because what is there is a straight division of the spoils between two groups none of them represents a genuine majority.
It is more of the two sides caring about avoiding accountability and the stick of America rather than a genuine solution for Sudan problems.
The southern illusion is in the belief that after six years the international community will care to ensure that the NIF does not renage on the agreement while the north is living the illusion that Machakos means the end of the NIF. When will both groups wake up to the fact that the NIF is not negotiating itself out of power in the north or out of the oil fields in the South.
All this talk about freedom and democracy is non-starter as long as all the criminals who ran the machinery of torture and opression are still running the show.
Two weeks ago we learned in a public meeting that there is unpublished agreement between the NIF and the SPLA on the issue of human rights. Why is this agreement kept hidden if it is not for the two sides stiching up another dark age for the people of Sudan.
Yes there is a lot of hope the agreement may stop the war but even this is not a certainty. The agreement may stop the direct fighting between the SPLA nad the NIF but it carries the seeds of a continuation of another ugly conflict with the SPLA being used as a surrogate to quell southern resistance.
And all the Northern political leaders who believed what some of the mediators were telling them that their role will come after the signing of the agreement, will be waiting for this role for long time if they do not accept to be co-opted within the NIF machinery like al-Hindi and Mubarak.
The NIF magicians managed to create an illusion that too many fell for it.
