Dear Salambo Your problem you are asking people to discuss a serious issue that deserves our attention. Next time make sure your title is a joke or congratulations; at least you will get more views but I can’t promise responses. Enough sarcasm. The issue of what is called Shamasa is a very important one and it is a barometer of the failures of the state in Sudan and also the social prejudices of the groups that inhabit the centre of Sudan. The called Shamasa are not unique to Sudan and they the result of the imbalances in development, wealth distribution, and the lack of the social safety net modern states provide for the underprivileged. These groups are common in Africa, Asia, South America, and even in USA. You will not find the same extent of the problem in Western Europe because of the system that ensure no one should go without the necessity of life and the small groups that defined as the homeless are mainly drawn from those suffering from substance abuse (in UK there also a small group of 16-17 who come under this category because of the changes in social security laws that were meant to keep them in education). In most countries in the world the reasons are recognised and programmes are afoot to convert them from a problem to an asset. Unfortunately in Sudan –despite the good work of many academics and social workers- the group is associated with ethnicity and social prejudices. The war in the south, the drought in the west, etc, contributed to the problem in Sudan. This is compounded by the fact that the residents of the centre had a foothold in migrant labour receiving countries so most families got the sort of support that saved them the indignity of homelessness and lack of means for basic necessities. The discriminatory nature of the recruitment practices of these government when looking for labour resulted in under-representation of Sudanese from the South and other areas. We need to move away from the stereotyping and deal with the issue as the failure of the state to create the environment and conditions that allow people to keep their dignity and self-respect I will stop here for now. Regards
