Sub: Arrest of Brig. Abdelaziz Khalid


This is to inform you that on Thursday, 23rd September 2004, the immigration authorities at Abu Dhabi Airport (United Arab Emirates) arrested Brig. Abdelaziz Khalid upon arrival from Cairo. The authorities threaten to deport him to Sudan where he could face serious threats to his life. Brig. Khalid is a political opponent of the government of General Omar Al Bashier and chairman of the Sudanese National Alliance Forces. He is member of the Leadership Council of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which is an umbrella group uniting all the pro-democracy political forces in Sudan. In 1993 Brig. Khalid was accused of sabotage by the military regime of General Al Bashier. In light of the aggressive nature of the regime in Khartoum we believe that there is a real threat to the safety and personal security of Brig. Khalid.

Information we received confirmed that Brig. Khalid is still in detention in Abu Dhabi and could be repatriated to Sudan at any time despite the fact that he has been exile since 1989. Such an act sets a dangerous precedent that a state member of the United Nations arrests and repatriates a well-known political opponent to a military dictatorship which applies the death penalty.

We appeal to all human rights organizations, activists and individuals from all over the world to take urgent note of the arrest of Brig. Khalid and call upon the authorities in Abu Dhabi to release Brig. Khalid immediately or allow him to proceed to a third country.

آخر المتابعات من أبو ظبي فقد قامت النيابة العامة بتمديد فترة اعتقال العميد عبدالعزيز خالد لمدة أسبوعين في انتظار ان يتم الحل في هذه المدة، ولن يتم تسليمه لنظام الخرطوم قبل هذه المدة..
