كما أن هنالك كنوزا في باطن هذه الأرض
هنالك أيضا الغام
وهنالك أيضا قبور:
هنالك قرى مدارية
نزل عليها من السماء
برميل معبأ بالشظايا والمسامير،
وكان هنالك جنود مطوقون
رفعوا البيرق الأبيض
ظانين أنهم يستسلمون للعدو
وليس لسكاكينه.
بعد المطر الأول
ستنبت الأعشاب الجديدة:
سنابل النفط والدخن ستخرج مع سنابل الثأر
وغناء بلبله الأجش
ومن مكامنها ستخرج الأشباح
برؤوسها المشجوجة ودمها المتجلط
الذي سيظل يسيل إلى الأبد
فخذوا حذركم أيها الفتيان،
أيها العمال النفطيون
أيها الفلاحات الحليقات ذوات العمائم البهيجة
وانتم أيضا أيها السياسيون الأغرار
ففي هذا التراب الأفريقي سهل التجريف
وتحت هذا المطر المداري
لا شيء يبقى مدفونا للأبد.



Wherever U Dig, Body Parts Will Turn Up
Beside hidden treasure, there R landmines,
And mass graves:
Tropical villages upon which,
Barrels of nails and shrapnel descended from the sky,
Surrounded soldiers,
Hoisting the white flag,
Thinking they were surrendering to the enemy,
Not to the enemy's knives.
After the first rain
New grass will sprout:
Ears of corn, ears of oil and ears of revenge
Will come to view;
The rasping sound of the nightingale of revenge will be heard.
>From their hiding places
Ghosts will emerge
Their split ######### covered in drying blood
That will trickle for ever.
So beware young men, oil workers,
And U, clean shaven women who till the land
Wearing your vividly colored turbans
U too novice politicians
U all should know
That in this easily eroded African soil
Under this tropical rain
Nothing remains buried for ever.
